Overcoming an issue of credibility...

The best way to overcome an issue of credibility is to gain credibility...I know this sounds stupid but bear with me.

When I started out I was working for others and doing weddings. I was also quite young at the time. I lucked out and never messed anyones wedding up but I dont suggest this for everyone or anyone. Start at the bottom and work your way up

From what I have read from you I believe you have done youth dances and are starting to do corporates right? If so you are on the right road. Travelling with others more experienced to weddings is a great idea but look around just because one DJ does something it dosent make him the best. See a few and develop a style from there. Go as often as possible when you are not playing yourself then when the question is asked you can say I have been involved in XXX weddings wth several DJ companies and now I am on my own

Practice delivery....Public speaking dosen't come naturally to anyone. Talk to yourself in the car, infront of the mirror etc. take a Christopher leadership course in public speaking. It just wont help with your DJ skills it will help in the sales department too. Sales and marketing seminars will help too but choose carefully which ones you attend

Have a nice clean setup and repeat every time. Take pictures along when doing a sales meeting regardless if a banquet manager of a hotel or a bride to be. This can go a long way to ofsetting alot of experience. Know your equipment too and what it can and cant do

If you can start to garner 1 to 2 referrals on every function you will be more than on your way to the credibility you need

I hope this has been of some help

Hey Jeff,

Nah, buddy, it doesn't sound stupid. It's pretty much what I had guessed I would have to do. I can do this and that towards more creds, but until I actually have more creds, it's more or less a salesman job. Once I get the creds, the creds will speak for themselves. I never heard of the Christopher thing, but will check it out. Thank you for your encouragement.

Hey! Wait a minute! It looks like the Christopher Leadership Course is only in Canada, eh? Nah, won't be driving to Canada for the CLC. But I did join a local Toastmasters International towards the same goal of better public speaking. Good advice, Jeff.
