New Rack Cases

I would LOVE to get a rack case of some sort, but I have no clue. I'm worried that I wouldn't be able to fit it into the car that I use when I go to a gig plus I can barely lift anything over 40lbs.

But it sure would make setting up a little easier. It takes me two hours to set up by myself and an hour to break everything down.
 
As far as cases and weight go the SKB molded cases are possibly the lightest ones you'll find. Those old school wooden cases are already heavy before ya place the first piece of gear in 'em. :eek:

You can save a lot of weight with the newer amps, too. They're much lighter than their older bretheren and take up less rack space, hence a smaller case. :)

.My mini Gig Rig weighs a TON, even empty.

They are actually quite heavy compared to some newer companies' comparable-size cases that have come on the market.

Don't get me wrong, I've been a big fan of SKB and I own several of their products, but some of their lines (particularly the Gig Rig and Mini Gig Rig) are damn HEAVY when you fill them with gear!

this year, I plan to research cases and hope to come up with a suitable replacement for the MGR.

I'd like to drop at least 10 pounds (empty) with the new cab, and then find another 10 pounds inside the cab that is unnecessary or redundant.

Just to give y'all an example, I have two line voltage & surge suppress boxes, an SL Waber and a Furman PL-8. The Furman plugs into the SL Waber (which is really heavy but its there for circuit protection).

Maybe I could replace the two boxes with a single Do-It-All box and cut a few more pounds!

now i simply have a laptop, denon hd 2500, bose T1 sound engine(mixer), a mic, and a Bose L1 model 2. All fits very very easily on a rock-roller cart and in my small car. My mixer is no bigger than my hand, and weighs 2 pounds. Stairs are no problem

Scott, theres no question I would have a lighter, more efficient sounding system if money wasn't such a factor..all the heavy gear is cheaper LOL :sqwink:

It goes without saying they are the lightest. Well actually if you didn't say it I wouldn't have replied here. What I mean to say is there is one advantage that I never thought of and that is whether you are more concerned with "weighting out" or "cubing out". There can be a lot of space in the back of those SKBs, especially with with those light weight amps. There is even some extra space on the sides.

The guy I bought some of my SKB's from had a compact car he used for gigs. It was a marvel of packing ingenuity. By making his own wood cases, he had five or six big old class A/B amps, he could custom build them just the depth he needed. He couldn't fit the stuff in the car when housing his stuff in SKB cases. His custom made wood racks just fit.

Like I said though, I bought his SKBs so I voted for light weight.

And oh yeah wooden rack cases have better tone. Don't laugh! I learned that from and awwdeeohfile (audiophile)
