Seems like you are going in 10 directions at the same time. You keep saying your "old school". Many here know how to get to "Point B", but rather than having us assuming anything, perhaps it would be helpful if you told us exactly all the equipment you are using now (and what software, if any), so we know what "Point A" is.

everything is old school. it's old Except for the mic, I bought that fairly recently. That is Nady. Somebody dented the windscreen but I fixed that. Nady said for me to call them. I am looking though at maybe audio techinica
PCDJ red 5.2 software. performed flawlessly for me last night. if it works, it's not broken.
Pioneer SE DJ5000 headphones I won those in a contest many many years ago and have been very reliable
I use Numark controllers, CDs and mixers. I like Numark
I use Yamaha for sound
Fast set up and faster load out. and the car I have is an old Pontiac 2 dr Grand Am.
Got to get some gigs for some new stuff.
The plan is to get this controller which has a software that I would need to learn and some new speaker stands.
The clients aren't that concerned as long as I can deliver what I said. The stuff the client had was one step up from tin can and string, so it made my old stuff look good. Still better than DJ Tape Deck's stuff. Except he had a brand new truck

I know a bunch of DJs who go from the laptop to a simple live sound type mixer (mainly to add mics) and don't bother with a controller.

I'm one of them. I thought about buying a controller but it would be little more than a toy for me

Serato allows me to edit ID3 tags while the song is playing, plus all the track info (like comments, que's, and loops) is also stored in the song file, making it real easy to copy everything to my back up computer. This is just an example - your mileage may vary.

I think most software can do that. I know Mixmeister can and I'm fairly certain that VDJ can also

You are correct Jeff. For Mobile Deejaying...All a Controller is, is a toy. An additional piece of gear to make manufacturers money.

I have a controller, but used it at maybe 35 gigs before I decided to not use it any more. I prefer not using one.

In the near future, I will be utilizing touch screens 100% to perform. I already do partially. I love the Multi Touch interface in Virtual DJ.

I was considering it, but I may be considering allocating the funding toward other much needed things. I do need new speaker stands more than a controller. A lot of these things to me are toys. they are nice but are they practical? To me a touch screen would make more sense to the point where you don't even need a mouse anymore. I have a hard time because I don't necessarily subscribe to the Jones Update. (which is keeping up with the Joneses) I may be considering the money toward trying to do a little SEO for the website or some advertising.

Hardly. Maybe not necessary for every style of DJing. But good controllers are professional level tech that serve a lot of critical functions for the DJs that use them. I could not DJ effectively without mine with the exception of a disaster event. But it wouldn't be the level of service I sell.

A lot of these things, many of the differing issues all appear to be running on what's a manner of personal preference. One guy does this, this and this while another does that, that, and that. It doesn't appear to be "wrong" or anything, what works for one might not necessarily work for another and it's not wrong , it's just how you do it.

A controller is just another tool for the Mobile DJ. You do not need it to play music (although I still recommend a controller with a built in sound card), but if you're into any kind of real mixing - piecing songs together with seamless transitions at specific Que points - IMHO it's almost indispensable. Sure, you can try to do a juggling act with mouse/keyboard/touchscreen, but why, when using a controller makes it easier?

Totally agree with Handinon. I've used a controller from the start (started DJing 2 years ago). It was a technology that was very intuitive to me, and it allowed me to develop my DJ skills pretty quickly. I still use a mouse and keyboard in coordination with my controller and computer, and it works for me. I could probably do without the controller, but I like the many of the features of my controller and I'd gotten pretty good at using it.[emoji4]

I wouldn't say in all cases it's a toy some guys use them very well and very efficiently. If I was using VDJ or Serato on a regular basis I would likely pick one up but I use Mixmeister I don't believe you can even map a controller to it

Seems like Mixmeister is a lot more popular north of the border. Only problem is version 5.x or 6.x (the ones that work) are basically Unobtanium, plus who knows if they work on Windows 10. Lots of horror stories about the current 7.x version (Fusion).

I recommend the Numark mixtrak pro 2. I guess the new one is the mixtrak 3. With Serato lite! Works fine and does all that I needed as a new dj. Works solid and easy to work! You can also find a lot of these used as some people buy these and find out that they didn't really want to be a dj!

Be sure to get one with on board sound card!

Did you at all make a decision yet as to what you either will get or did get for a controller? I messed up the Denon DN MC 600 I had by using the wrong power cord. I got lucky and got another one at the NJDJN meeting for $50. The only issue is the right load button doesn't work. That's not a big deal. I just manually load a song on that side. I love it because it's compact and does everything I need it to do. It's a great unit built to last. I have a flight case with a built in laptop stand that I can easily carry the Denon in. One good thing is it has 2 mic inputs. I plan on getting another dual cordless mic to have 4 cordless mics to use. The Samson dual cordless mic works good. Good enough that I plan to get another one. The 2 down sides are that the base house unit is made of plastic and you have to turn the button on inside the mic as well as the outside to get the mics to work.

I also have a cheap Pioneer controller doing backup duty. It cost $250. I don't care for it. I just wanted something just in case my main controller went down and I need to switch out quickly.

That's a nice controller. I like Denon!

I'm not a controller DJ but I respect those who are. I still use turntables and a mixer. It would bore me to just have a laptop, load a track and press play. Music delivery is a major component of a dj.
So you use a computer, but just fade between the computer and cd, and turntable with a sound board?
