Running XP on my home tower, all of a sudden when I use Google and click on a result, I am hijacked to random pages. ALSO occasionally while my browser is open, a second page randomly opens. I use FIrefox primarily, as well as IE occasionally. My system also appears to have slowed down somewhat.

I updated and scanned with AVG with no results... I ran Malwarebytes and found 5 registry issues and fixed them. I ran Trend Micro Housecall which found a hidden virus in a DVD copying program I had. I ran Spybot search and destroy which found nothing out of the ordinary.

The problem still occurs. Where do I go from here?

I have HiJackthis installed, but the logs mean nothing to me. If they would to you, let me know and I could post it.

Thanks in advance.

Harry,

First things first. Look in the add/remove programs and see if you see something suspicious. If you're not sure what's suspicious, do a screen capture and we can comment on this ahead of time.

Second, Go ahead and post HiJack This log.

did you try doing a system restore?

not sure if that will work but its worth the try

start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore

pick a previous date when your system was running fine and restore

Thanks guys...malwarebytes was one of my first stops... here is the hijack log... and nothing looks out of place when I go to install/remove page...

Harry, I wish I could help you but I am pretty stupid when it comes to computers!

I do know how to transer any essential files from the computer HD to an external and then reformat the hard drive and reload the OS! In your position that is what I would do!

did you try doing a system restore?

Generally with a browser hijack System Restore won't do you much good it seems to be stuck in the browser.

From past experience I have to lean to what Steve and Steve said re-install

Harry,

You got more sh_t on there, then Cod has liver pills! :sqerr: :sqeek:

First things I'd rid myself of, are MusicMatch, iTunes and Google Toolbar -- 3 of the worst browser hijackers I know of. Anti-malware programs won't remove them, because they are "supposed" real programs. All they are, are essentially ad based hijackers.

As the others have said, unless you want to spend lots of time, yer probably better off trashing the system and starting over...

How so? I have both on almost all of my computers and have never had a hijack issue? I would take Music Match off just because it sucks...

I consider them malware. Not only do they target you for ads and redirect your browser at times, but they also index your drive content -- which is used for said process, and also slows your computer to a crawl at times.

My security software (ESET) -- monitors all ingoing and outgoing traffic, and I have it set to prompt me before allowing any communications, and I also have a logger I wrote that captures the info programs send back to the Mothership.

Trust me -- those two are evil -- and yes, MM sucks all around, super bloatware that will slow yer machine to a crawl, and also hijack yer browser :sqerr:

I had 4 family members with that same virus/worm. After about 2 weeks of PITA and headache creating work. I found the solution.

Do a full system restore, The Anti-Virus companies don't have a 'complete' fix for the virus, and the problem is the virus on the computer actually stops the programs from updating so basically it will never leave.

The virus/worm is called KoobFace. There are about 50 different variations at this time and each one is a pain to get rid of.

Save your sanity and time and just restore. Your brain will thank you.

Also before you hookup to the internet put a Anti-Virus on there, and then update asap.

basic rule of thumb if it's free you are paying for it somehow

Some of these might be fine, but I have to say... if you have 3, 4, 5 or 6 anti malware programs running at the same time, it's definitely going to slow down your computer. Pick ONE and stick to it. Keep it up to date.

I don't recommend running "real time" protection (i.e. teacup from Spybot) although I like Spybot as a stand-alone application.

I still think you're running WAY too many items at the same time. How much RAM do you have? You might also want to re-run the HiJackThis application without any other programs running.

Thanks Carlos! That is my rule of thumb as well. Generally, I only have AVG running. When I ran that report, I was in full blown search mode and had several applications open (Malwarebytes, Spybot, etc...)

OK...adding insult to injury, my CDROM drive has taken a crap. Couldnt reload Windows if I wanted to currently... Soooo....now I am faced with ... live with this problem... or abandon the PC and get a newer one.... or spend money replacing the CDROM and repair this one. Hmmmm.
