This here sounds like BS to me! "I do 500 with my Dyna (two subs and 2 tops.) " somebody in a post above made that statement.;) I can go by my Pool in the Condos and play a transistor radio, all the neighbors around will hear it blaring. Does that mean to say it is adequate for the same amount of people in a party?
I run a three way, tri amped system (Tweeter Boxes, Midrange Boxes and Bass Bins), which is more efficient than a regular pair of two way tops with subs, and I can barely keep up the DB level in Club Rocca Bar where I do sound a lot. It provides for about 400 people. The other Guy who uses either Mackies, JBLs. QSC s as tops with a pair of SRX 728s powered by Crown Itechs makes it but in my opinion he needs more tops.
I know what I am talking about. This ain't no freakin Wedding or Pastor's Conference.
 
I am hoping the OP chimes in again at some point, as we kind of kibashed his plan a bit. Maybe if Everett can lay down the types of music he plays and the types of facilities he expects to play in, we can offer a $3000 system to start with.

I hate to rain on your parade but what you have just chosen is just asking for trouble. More speakers does not necessarily = more sound unless it is part of an incorporated master system. Some of what the chaps above were advising you to get is powerful pro sound gear. How and where are you going to mount all those tops? Do you know what Comb Filtering and Phasing problems are? You are attempting to go the cheapest route which in the end will cost you more when you become dissatisfied with it.

Is that all you can do? Snicker at a Custom Built Cabinet? Those EV Drivers alone that I use cost more than a lot of those two way speakers I see being used on this board. It seems to me that you think for something to be credible it has to be Made In China and bought from a DJ store! Im teasing Canute. However first you say one needs more tops then your saying no that then you will have phasing issues which is it? I guess everyone else should bow out you handle this one ok? Your the expert Go for it. Enjoy yourself dude.

Would I do a 400 person Wedding with 2 15" tops and 1 sub, hell ya! Will I get referrals, hell ya! Will my sound be clear and at the correct volume, yes again.

Please feel free to provide suggestions if you have any.
 
I would suggest start small. Also, will you be using vynil, cdjs, or midi controller.

My recommendation:
Get 2 good PA powered speakers and a midi controller of your preference. I mean, I'm pretty sure it's rare to do 400+ people party, unless you're doing school events or similar. If you're doing bday parties and such, PA speakers will do fine. Then once you get income, then invest on subs and such.

Powered Speakers: Run about a grand
Midi Controller: Run about $200 to about a grand
Then you have about another grand for maybe one or two party lights and truss.

If you get a larger events of 400, see if you could network with another DJ to come and bring xtra equipment and charge it to client.

It didn't sound like the OP was talking about weddings .. most likely dances/small club and 2 tops and 1 sub isn't going to make the grade. Will it work, ya .. Will it sound good, Hell No ! :triwink:

The point is if he wants a 400 person setup, $3000 won't do it. If he wants a system that can GROW to handle 400, then we can help him pick $3000 worth of goodies and I'm sure everyone will have their opinion.

I did say the guy needs more tops but I did not say where, did I? I am sure you know what fill speakers are. Especially in a Club setting.
 
you'll have to do a lot of regular sized, regular priced gigs
before you start getting into the "400 guest" gigs.

SO until then
a smaller, more reasonably priced system would be just fine.

the OP did say "up to"
let's try to not him in technical jargain, high gear prices, and speaker-envy.
