I think almost all of us were deejaying 10 years ago. Can you think of 3 songs that you remember playing ALL THE TIME at events in 2013 that you NEVER play any more? These would be popular songs you would play during open dancing at events...not background music songs or filler early on at a bar/club per say.

1. The Fox (What does the Fox Say) Ylvis - I was playing this at Bat Mitzvahs back then, and even some weddings.
2. Justin Timberlake - Suit and Tie - I did have a request for this song at a wedding in 2021, and played it. That was the last time
3. Cali Swag District - Teach Me How to Dougie - It was still very popular in 2013. I don't think I have played it since prior to 2020.

One More:
Harlem Shake - Baauer - This was like an explosive FAD song at the time IMO. I remember it was very popular for like 6 months then it just died.

Other notable/honorable mentions:
Swedish House Mafia - One - This was a Banger back then among dancers who knew EDM...
David Guetta - When Love Takes Over - His first huge hit...It was still popular in 2013. I haven't played it in YEARS
World, Hold On - Bob Sinclair - I was still playing this in 2013 and people really loved it. I have not played it in YEARS
California Girls - Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg - I must have played this song over a hundred times after it came out in 2010. I think I played it in 2019 at one event.
Like a G6 - This song was HUGE prior to 2013...I was still playing it that year.
Sexy and I know it - LMFAO - HUGE back then. I did play it at a wedding last year because they had LMFAO on their request list.
Right Round - Flo Rida - This was pretty popular probably up until 2016 or so, but I don't think I have played it since 2020.
Cyclone - Baby Bash - It's been a LONG TIME since I played this one.
Baby Huey - Pop, Lock and Drop It - I am fairly certain I still played this a couple of times a year up until maybe 2016...I don't think I have played it since then!
R Kelly - Step in the Name of Love - I haven't played it for obvious reasons, but absolutely would if it was requested at a wedding - With that said, I have still received requests for Ignition a couple of times since 2020 at weddings and did play it.

Do you think incorporating any of these songs into dance sessions at weddings in 2023 would be successful on the dance floor?

What other songs can you think of that you were playing all the time or very often 10 years ago that you just don't play any more.

Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke is one. I played it for the first time in years a couple of weeks ago at bar gig.
Happy by Pharell is another one. I may play it if there are a lot of kids at an event but its been a while since I played that song.
Thrift Shop and Can't Hold us by Macklemore
Treasure by Bruno Mars
Gangnam Style by Psy. I'm so glad that song died out.
I'm Different by 2 Chainz

I think a lot of songs from that era will be back in rotation. When I did a college event last month about 85% of the songs on their playlist was from this era and a little older. I get requests for Teach Me How to Dougie currently.

I still play Blurred Lines like once a year. Happy by Pharrel is a good one to bring up. That song got SUPER PLAYED OUT at weddings, and I was seeing it on my DNP lists in like 2019 so I chose to not play it any more because I realized it was just played out, and dance floor reaction to it was actually weak at that point. I still play Treasure. I think that is a great song! I play it at least twice a year. Gangnam Style is still a hit AT ASIAN WEDDINGS, but I don't play it unless it's requested.

MackleMore songs are noteable ones too. I did have thrift shop as a request in 2022 on the couple's request list and played it. Cant Hold Us was a big one for a while. Haven't played that in 4 or 5 years.

I play Teach Me How to Dougie all the time, it still gets a really good response for me.
Funny how different places have different tastes...i may have played it 5 times total when it was new got a reasonable response once.

I still play Blurred Lines like once a year

I play that almost every night it's usually requested

Most of the songs Ricky listed are part of that Pop EDM phase that was really big for a few years. Songs that he didn't mention that I was playing a lot but skip now most of the time...

- Party Rock Anthem - LMFAO
- Get Lucky - Daft Punk
- Tik Tok - Kesha
- Till the World Ends - Britney Spears

That Kesha song came out in 09, but it fit really well into the sets that were popular back in those days.

I'd put basically the entire Black Eyed Peas catalog into this category at this point now. I'll occasionally drop RITMO (which I think of more as a J Balvin song), but I don't play Boom Boom Pow, I Gotta Feeling, Get it Started... unless I have a reason to.

I had I gotta Feeling as a Must play at a wedding last year lol. They loved it!

Let's Get it Started...Man every school dance or teen party I did back then that would be my go to first song to get them on the floor.

I incorporate Tik Tok into my sets sometimes still. Didn't play it in 2020, but I probably play it 2 times a year over the last 5 years. That was a solid one for a good 5 year run. NONE of the songs that have come out in the last 5-6 years I can say have had a SOLID 5 year run. Despacito is the only song I can think of that has had a SOLID 5 year run and still in somewhat of a rotation for me currently. There is Feel it Still and Havana, but they aren't on the same level that TIK TOK was.

I can't answer that question because it depends on the type of event I'm doing, what the client and crowd wants. Some events require you go back to songs from the past and some they want current stuff.

I laid off a lot of these songs about 4 or 5 years ago, but I'm beginning to see them creep back into requests. I think it's because those people that are gettingmarried now, were in the formative teen and pre-teen years, so they get that blast of nostelgia.

FWIW, I'm seeing a lot of throwbacks to this era and even earlier at school dances I'm doing in Kansas.

For me I can't name 3 songs since at a private event I might get a request for a song I haven't played in a while. It also depends on the event. Some events all the crowd knows is the same old stuff from back in the day. One song I haven't played in a long time that was a big hot years ago. When Can Our Love Begin. That was a very long song. Over 13 minutes long. Kenny Bobien Gave Me Love. Haven't played that in a while either. Those 2 along with others are super classics.

Then there a lot of the hip hop stuff that's hot for a minute and forgotten the next.

I was thinking the same thing.

With the horrible state of most new music anything that was a banger 5-10 years ago will generally get a good response
It's definitely easier to play a recurrent or throwback set than it is to play a lot of the newer music.

One song I brought back recently that has been getting really good reactions for me is Natasha Bedingfield's - Unwritten. I don't think I played this a ton at weddings in that era because I was playing so much faster stuff. But if you're looking for a throwback that a bunch of girls will belt out on the dancefloor... I'd encourage any of you to throw it back in and see if you get a good reaction.

Maybe a coincidence, but I was listening to the Pop 2K channel on XM going home from work the other day, and that song came on. I said to myself that I haven't heard this one in a few years now.

I had that song on a home made CD of top hits I had made, and played it routinely at Store Sales Event gigs back then. It's a very good pop radio song for sure.

Another song that is like a one hit wonder was "Dance with Me" by Debolah Morgan. Going back 23 years. I actually like that song a lot. I don't know if it will go well on a dance floor today, but 35 to 44 year old women would remember it and love the song.

Call me Maybe Never died for me as any time I play it it's popular on the dance floor, but I see this one actually being revived a bit more in the coming years especially if the state of current music remains the same.

Released in 2004. So a bride in her early 30s at this point... would have come out when she was early teen years. It's a fairly deep throwback, but the evidence has been good that it works.

I gotta Feeling

I still view this as the perfect Grand Entrance song.................I can bring the entire bridal party in as it's ramping up and, just as the B&G are ready for their entrance it start really banging.
