Canute I know hence the diamond in the rough remark. Here in Toronto there are a couple of guys that use these speakers and the sound really good. The single 15 octive 3 way sounds great too. I know you are close by so go by and have a listen but bring your own music that you know.
He's looking to get another one and you mentioned you turned those in for a pair of RCF's. What are you thinking? Of course the RCF speakers sound a whole lot better. I bet you paid a whole lot more too. If someone offered me a pair of RCF speakers I would certainly get rid of my Yamaha speakers in a heart beat.
Don't be too hasty .. like any brand, they have products at many price points. The DSRs will be competitive through many of the "ART" line (300,400,700 series). SOme of the products above that are in a world of their own (or at least limited company).
Mix I simply sold the JBL's because I wanted a better quality of speaker. Basically stepped my game up to something different at the time. I bought the RCF's back in 2007 and back then every dj was using the Mackie SRM 450 on sticks. I just wanted something different and quality. I still have the RCF's, they still look like new and they are still the best sounding set of speakers I own. The investment was well worth it and the money was made back in the first 2 events I used them for.
I get that but he doesn't have the dollars to spend right now on something better. He'll do fine with those. It doesn't sound that bad. I've heard a whole lot worse. I got rid of the JRX speakers I had because i kept blowing the crossover in them. They have a little hole in the back. When you see that hole lighting up that means you're pushing them too hard and about to blow something. I bought the Yamaha S215's and haven't looked back. I still have them and if need be if the price is right will use them.
I've had the JRXs for 7 years and although I've been using the Yorkies the last couple of years more often than not I never blew a crossover or any other part. I regularly run them with a Yamaha P5000 but occasionally ran them with a P7000 and never a problem....I don't ever recall seeing a hole in the back of them either :vbrolleyes:
Please take a look at the back of the cabinet. Mine had a small pin hole in the back. I used a QSC 2450 with mine and I had to be careful when pushing them.
I'll take our word for it. All I can tell you is I was pushing them with a bigger amp and never lit them up
A lot of time it's NOT the power that kills them, it's the quality of the signal. A clipped signal with a modest amount of power will potentially do more damage than a clean signal with double/triple the power (or more). Clipped signals have peaks that maintain voltage far longer than a normal signal will .. heating up those voice coils.
Did you have the volume buttons on the amp all they way up? It also depends on the volume of your main on your mixer or controller. And how high you have your slides, plus gain. That can make a difference. Now you said you never lit them up which tells me you knew there was a light that could come from the back of the hole.
I hope he's OK. I would think about getting a couple of roadies to avoid hernia.
That is why they make Hand Trucks/2 Wheelers and Rock n Roller Carts.
You are talking gain structure and that would be dependent on the mixer you use where your sliders would be. I learned gain structure a long time ago I'm ok in that area. Btw you forgot about the gain on your processing
I just looked Mix there are no lights or holes or anything else on the back of my JRXs and trust me when I say I was pushing them as hard as they could be pushed

I think the Lights he was talking about are the Bulbs placed as Fuses inside the cabinet which can be seen through the port holes in the front. I had a buddy you had a pair and it used to do that when under powered and also when over powered depending on which amp he was using.
Well you guys got me curious I looked again and there are no bulbs in the front either. I took the screens off both of them just to make sure maybe it was a feature they disco tiniest or maybe mine were built on a Friday I don't know what to tell you. I also don't know how he would see them lighting up in the front when he was behind them or what good they would do you in the front but hey you could fill a warehouse with what I don't know

The bulbs are mounted on the back inside wall. You can see them light up when you look through the front when they are clipping. You need new Glasses you big Dummy! LOL
