My new Photo Booth Kiosk

I really don't see how anyone can call an "open air" or a person taking pictures of people in front of a backdrop a "photobooth". WHERE IS THE BOOTH? My experience is the magic happens in the booth. The freedon from the intimidation of others watching results in much more animated photos. I get great photos all the time. I have looked at just about every photobooth web page on the planet and the photos from the open air things (we really can't call them booths) are consistantly a lot less fun looking then those of a actual booth or enclosure of some sort.

Okay, I've seen a few of these things and although they are cool, the whole concept seems kind of "dated" to me. I can appreciate the craftsmanship and ingenuity, but why have this big clunky expensive thing when all you need is a person with a camera? I get that the novelty print-outs are cute and fun, but really all you need is a mini and a printer. No matter how slick you make it, it still looks like you brought the arcade to the event.

BTW, Dean's right. It's not a booth and shouldn't be referred to as one. It's a kiosk.

I must disagree.. (I mean no disrespect). But... photobooths were invented as enclosed boxes with curtains to hide behind at the turn of the century because they were installed in stores and boardwalks. The people using them wanted "privacy" from strangers. And.. perhaps to catch a bit of an intimate time together on film.

The photobooths in use at events today are not intended for that purpose. Why do you need a "box" in the corner of the room where people hide behind a curtain for rather "intimate" photos? How is that entertaining for the other 100+ people in the room looking at 2 people walk into a box, stay for a few seconds, and then walk out? The only people being entertained are the people in the box. Does your client really need copies of photos of guests making out with each other. Or, giving the finger... Or, lifting their shirt. Or, groping each other? An open photobooth adds a little "class" to the photos.

An open photobooth creates fun because the people using it are being encourged, cheered, and laughed with while they are using it. It's contageous. People from all around the room want to be part of the laughing and fun.

What happens with a closed in box? The guests are waiting in line "yawning" and waiting for their "turn" in the box. BORING.......It reminds me of waiting in line for the port-a-potty. Or, waiting to vote.


A photobooth should be about entertaining as many people as possible. To create fun. To create excitement. To BRING people to it.

They don't enclose a roller-coaster "in a box" in an amusement park do they? No. Its because its fun to watch other people using it while YOU are waiting in line. Watching other people using the photobooth while you are waiting in line gives you fun ideas of what props to use. Or, what poses to make.

I've seen open photobooth photos look 1000000% better than any closed box photos of a handful of people squashed together.

You CAN have an open style where people are getting the booth "vibe" but still open.
