I completely understand the too much bass issue. In most instances it's too much of a specific frequency creating a booming effect which can be caused by many things, typically a combination things. Improperly placed subs, odd room acoustics, incorrect EQ settings, an improperly adjusted bass "enhancing" device, an out of phase speaker, improper crossover settings, a poorly mastered song and many other items can combine to create a bass disaster.
However, a person who understands these issues and has the proper equipment, can work within the possibilities of the room acoustics to create clean bass that is not boomy and may not even be perceived as being loud, it's just impressive.
Many times the boom is actually mid-bass coming from the tops in the 120-200 Hz region which should be easily cured with an equalizer adjustment. The bass coming from subs should hit you in the gut. The mid-bass from the tops should be hitting you in the chest and is what dual 15 cabs are designed for.

Thanks Harris. Bass tone properly set with the proper Sub can please even the elders in attendance during cocktail time as well.
For the old Italians - recordings of Frank Sinatra and other 60's jazz singers (for lack of a better term) typically have low bass notes coming from drums and an acoustic bass that many people have ever heard. Listening to that music over a well tuned PA with decent subs brings those lost notes back adding a new appreciation of that music.
