Mackie HD1531 - any good?

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
Loneavenger...which Mackies...HD1531's or 1530's? I would venture that you were talking about the HD1531's. :)

If trying to pole mount a speaker of this weight, wouldn't one just expand the tripod, lock it, place the speaker on it laying down and lift it up? It seems that would make putting these on a tripod much easier.

Looks impressive w/ a 10" midrange AND a 2.5" compression driver AND it's only 67 lbs BUT some genius forgot to include a pole mount.
 
... wait a sec. That site is misleading. You have to get the bottom (LF Sub-section 7001 A-BA) along with the 7001-A top section in order to have 3-way sound. This (4Pro7001a) unit is only a 2-way mid/high top with no pole mount. It's high passed at 200Hz and it's meant to be run with the bottom unit for full range sound... Not very appealing now.

Was mis interpretation. Im glad we finally got the real info on this. I was under the impression you had tested or used one of these in the past. Glad Rick didnt assume the cabinet was what claimed including the pole mount.:triwink:About the thermal issue it was an issue with the SRM 450's which they never bothered to address even when the design was moved to China. Im not aware of other Mackie units having the same issues.

Huh? I was originally just thinking that, based on the specs from the RCF website, the RCF 4Pro7001a-mh looked good (((BUT))) I thought it was a full-range 3-way cabinet. Upon further investigating, I see it's only a mid-high top 2-way cabinet. The RCF site makes it sort of confusing because they have that bass bottom in the picture. What makes the 4Pro7001a-mh even more of a disappointment is the fact that it doesn't even have a pole mount option.

For me, that's a let down as I'm in the hunt for a 3-way pole mount speaker that'll get loud and clear (louder than my ZXa5s and clearer). The HD1531 achieves this but I'm kind of waiting on the PRX635 to hit the general market (for an A/B comparison) and I'm also thinking about the JTR Triple 12x as an option.

Just as a note, I haven't heard any 2-way powered box that can out do the ZXa5s. Especially considering it's weight. (I've never heard FBTs, RCFs or any $2200+ boxes).
 
Just got back from a GC run and got to spend some time (relatively salesman-free) just switching between their various speakers/subs. What an eye-opening experience. They had pretty much all the mackie/jbl/qsc stuff. Odd thing was, the HD1531 wasn't even close to the JBL PRX535, IMHO. I'd love to hear the 3-way JBL because that 2-way was really, really good.

The Mackies are 1800 watt boxes, tri-amped. The JBLs were 2-way boxes and I think around 800-1000 watts. I'd heard the Mackies before, by themselves and was impressed but when I got to A/B them myself, it was quite telling. I'd like to get them but not quite sure about hauling them and also I can just see the grandmas, yelling about those huge/loud speakers. For all the Bose nay-sayers, that's one thing it seriously helps eliminate. I never get "too loud" complaints anymore.

What are you looking for that your current systems don't offer?


From a business stand point, I hate having gear just sitting around collecting dust. I don't feel the need to have every piece of equipment to fit every possibility.

I only own gear that gets used regularly. If the occasion comes up that I need something unique, I rent it.

I only buy new gear if I see a need on a regular basis.

Scott, for my purposes, I think I've found it. I've paired an EV sba760 sub with my little zxa1 tops. Will probably bump up to 12 or 15" tops as cash allows but for now, this is a huge improvement over the Bose and, believe it or not, it's much more compact and portable than the L1.
