Let it Rock - Fist vs finger?

Hey all,

As a Prime Cuts subscriber, I have a "Radio Edit" version of this song by Kevin Rudolf.

But in it, it still says "Raise your finger", i.e. your middle finger to whatever...

I had heard that a version exists where the "finger" has been replaced with "raise your fist"....

I've been searching, but have yet to find this version.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Joe

What's the difference in intended result Joe...?

A finger is just a small arm (which holds a fist), and imparts the same meaning... ;)

All things considered, I'd probably put this under the Chinese censorship umbrella...

Rick,

Thanks. But maybe I should've clarified myself in the initial post. I had heard the song as it originally was done (albeit the Prime Cuts "radio edit") - and was told that at a recent elementary dance, another DJ played this song as it stands - well, the school's Principal was there & well, now they're looking for other entertainment options. :)

Talking then with my partner on the ambulance who has a 6 & 12 y/o daughter - he told me that his daughter found a more "kid friendly" version, but he wasn't sure where she had found it.

Actually since my OP, I did find a version on Kidz Choice, Vol #15 - that says "raise a hand"... so that'll probably work - if I want to play this for a varied public event, etc.

Thanks,

Joe

And a fist might be misinterpreted as well ;). Since the principal heard it last time, make sure he see's what version you're using. If he starts listening to the song and recognizes it from the other time, his probably go nuts and won't hear raise your hand. So talk to him beforehand (No pun intended :D:D:D)

Yeah,

Probably won't do it for the one school - if I get their event(s) - but looking at it for other events/locations.

Thanks,

Joe

Just me Joe...

I don't know the song, but censoring "go f yerself" in symbolism, is kinda like telling the world they have no input, and they mean diddly squat.

I could see you folks censoring super soaker type stuff, or kill people stuff -- but the basic right to free speech, and giving the finger to someone...?

That's how America has always expressed it's displeasure -- although Toby said it nicely -- "We'll put a boot up yer ass" :sqcool:

I'm not sure we need to take something like that away from the kids growing up...

Rick I agree with you completely. I think it's time to put once foot down with all the super soaking, spiderman, ho's, etc., yes there are sexual innuendos, or double meaning to different things in the lyrics of music throughout the decades, but now it's just ridiculous.

As an example we have what recently happened to Rihanna and Chris Brown, he pleads innocent even though the pictures show something that's the complete opposite. And I see the results of domestic violence on my worktable many times a year.

The police should be able to tank the scumbag even if the woman will not help in the prosecution because she "loves" the nitwit too much. You have proof, then let the DA prosecute and nail the bastards even if the girl doesn't want to. That's the only way things may change.

Same should be done with music, glorifying behavior that's demeaning and can provoke certain things. Parent's need to get their heads out of the gutter and start parenting.

Dang tough one man....can you just bleep it in Adobe Audition or do it on the fly?

I've yet to have problems at an event with this suggestion of raising the middle finger, but I can see where it would PO some admin.

Same damn reason some schools don't want Mony Mony...

Its not the song causing the kids to do this stuff, several of them just learn it from each other. Their actions govern self censure. A school dance isn't a constitutional right....

Most schools I'm sure it won't be a problem (it hasn't for me) but some schools have a social dynamic that causes certain behaviors to prevail. If they act a certain way as a group, they've got to expect a certain result.

lol, good luck, hope this helps!

If I'm not mistaken, that version is sung by kids, not by the original artist. You could probably get away with that version for a group of preschoolers, but to anyone older than 8 you might be very uncool.

Personally, I'd edit the original. If needed, you could pretty much eliminate the whole second verse.

Thats the truth, its getting so far out of hand, I'm having to become more and more "creative" when I listen to songs and decide whether or not to play them. What sounds perfect to me could be the devil's music to someone else.

Just think about if the radios knew what "skeet" meant when "Get Low" was released by the Ying Yang Twins. The radio version went "down skeet skeet skeet" insted of "down skeet skeet motherf*****" :sqerr:

Nobody is talking about censorship or violating anyones free speech. The song was produced and recorded. Everyones rights are intact. The school however has every right to determine what is appropriate for their students. That's called freedom of choice. Choice to hire who they want and choice to hear the music that best fits their needs.

Joe,

Just edit in Mixmeister.

Quite frankly, I was being somewhat facetious in my earlier post ;)

I would never edit a song, except for length. It is not what the composer presented, and I even hate editing length or tempo.

If you (or your audience) don't like it the way it was done -- don't play it ;)

Life is either simple, or complicated -- God gave you that choice

If that were the case then rappers would be out of business. Original songs have been edited for many different reasons for years. To take something out of a song so that the kids can enjoy it is a benefit to the artist. If you don't have kids, this is something you could never understand.

I understand kids just fine Ron...

Five years of running a school bus company, driving the little snots almost everyday, dealing with their parents and teachers, taught me something important -- never have any of my own :sqwink:

My wife had one of those creatures though -- major PITA, I might add :sqerr:

You understand people in a way that suits you. You don't understand having your own child. Unless you have one of your own, a life that came from you, someone you brought into this world, I'm sorry but it is impossible for you to have that understanding. At least not as a parent or about when it pertains to your child.

I know what it's like having a goat because I've been to many farms and zoo's. But I've never owned one nor slept with one so I wouldn't have a true understanding.:sqerr:

Of course I'm sure things in this world are better off left alone. You not having a child must be one of them.:sqwink:

Actually, I have lived with kids -- my wife's, and my last GF had 2 as well, that lived with us. Still don't like them -- Hell, I didn't even like myself as a kid :sqerr:

Quite frankly, I have no idea for sure, whether there may be some little Ricky's running around out there... I would not be in the least bit surprised, given my past history -- although I imagine they have somebody else's last name (which is good, otherwise they'd be hitting me up for money ) :)

I'd rather clone myself -- I think that would be much easier, and I wouldn't have the worry about somebody singing about flipping the bird

Now there's where you are correct. You don't have to worry about these types of songs nor worry about those who would listen to them. You have no one to care for but yourself. So this would be a non issue with you. It does not nor would it affect you in anyway. What a relief that must be, having no one to worry about.:sqwink:
