Just got a call to do a job on October 19th and I'm nervous.

I'm already penciled in to do this event on October 19th. I did an event there this year in the same venue. The setup will be the same. 2 tops and 1 sub. I also will be using some lights on a light stand I bought. My reason for being nervous is there will be lip syncing at this event. I've never done an event like this. There will be a dance at the end . I know some will say it's easy. I know I got to have the songs people want to lip sync to. So I got to be on point. I guess I will need a paper list of songs the people are going to be doing so I know what song to setup when. I have a hot spot. So no issues with getting online. I know I will have some songs on my portable HD. Just got to be on point with getting people their song they are going to perform and not having them waiting for a long time to get their song to be played. What suggestions do any of you have please? Likje I said this is very new to me. I'm happy I'm getting the opertunity to do this. Should be very interesting.

You should ask for a listof people lip syncing and the songs they want to sing before hand. Do not rely on your hot spot to get online and get you the right song. The right version will be important to the contestants.
If it's just going to be open registration at the event (like karaoke), then good luck.

My iPads and iPhone have 4g and have hotspots. While they can come in handy, relying on them can be dangerous.

You want a list of performers AND either the actual mp3 file OR at the very least a youtube link of the song they have in mind (people may have edited version...or specific remixes in mind for their performance....just the song and title will never insure you are on the same page with them)....compile these into a playlist.... create your own list and have it there with you on a clipboard....any sudden variations can be penciled in...but u will atleast have a basic structure of the show and will not be AS overwhelmed by the need to find a song last minute...however...finding every single song last minute will not only stress you out...but create dead air during the show each and every act....

A little "help" for you to ignore and show up with your "hot spot"

Do u even know how to connect to your hot spot?

Someone just may show up with a CD for me to play a song they want to perform. No problem. Just put the CD in the draw and go to computer to get to the drive to play the song. Load it into a deck and hit play.

and i suppose you are going to seamlessly vamp on the mic while all this happens...and they say...no no....track 5....no wait....track 7...

while the crowd stares at the back of your head

im doing a talent show the first weekend in nov.... ive allready had 2 in person meetings with the client... we ironed out a form sent to all participants... all needed music is to be turned in 2 weeks prior... the line up will be set in stone.. and i will have a devoted playlist that will be my bible that night... the audience will not be waiting on me to do anything.

You probably plan on waddling in with a controller and 400 obscure house songs... good job!

Are you suggesting his chair be positioned facing away from the audience?

Chris, save your breath - he ain't listening.

This is not the same type of event like Chris has coming up. There won't be a set group of people you can get info from for the song they are going to perform. So no contacting anybody ahead of time. Just have to gather the info as they sign up to do a song. We will get the info ahead of time to be on point when the lip sync starts.

Once again you are making a mountain out of a molehill. It must be a company policy when there's no drama create some

You're probably right. It's just something I've never done before at an event. I will let the crowd know this is my first time doing lip sync at an event and please be patient with me.

I've DJ'd a bunch of performances at our local Pride events.
The drag queens used to bring their own home made CD's...
Now hey bring Ipods, phones, and USB sticks.
The point is, you're probably not gonna get much of anything in advance.
Even the schedule of performers is done last minute, and often revised on the fly.

Something like:

Ladies & Gentlemen, May I have your attention please.

Welcome Ladies & Gentlemen. My name is MixMasterMacho and I'm your dj tonight. Before we get started, ladies and gentlemen, I want to ask for your patience and forgiveness as I am admitting, before we start any lip synching, to being inept, inexperienced, unprepared, and otherwise prone to screwup. Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen for you understanding.

That'll set the right tone.

If you have someone hiring you, then you have a POC that can get this information. But what do we know.

I did 2 years of this Thursday nights at a bar in the 80's it's sort of like hosting a Karaoke show but easier.

You're not going to have a lot of advance notice on anything. If you're hosting make a call for "singers" and form a list about 20 minutes before show time if not suggest to the host they do. Play the songs in order....

HEY! Cut it out - you know how he feels about lists of music - especially right before a show!
Again I said it already. I rarely get a play list from clients because they believe in me and trust that I know my job. Unlike some others who have to rely on a play list to get the job done or they will suck, the client and the crowd attending the event will be pissed off.
