It's ALL about price..... so I took a shot...

unless of course you have set rates posted.

...which implies the DJ only delivers one thing, one way.

OH! the irony of a completely customized event at a pre-set price !! :sqwink:

Chuck, it was good talking to you today. Here's how I see it. Chuck is wanting to get out of his day job and start DJing full time. He needs to make enough money to live off of. Now if you're comfortable charging what you charge, that's great. Chuck felt he was worth more and what he offers was worth more so he quoted more.

I just don't understand why people will argue lower rates. It doesn't make sense to me. I think you should charge what you want, but don't belittle me because I charge more.
I have nothing in 2008 booked for less than $1500 and my brides tell me I should charge more for everything I do.

I support Chuck 100%.

Thanks Kevin!

As you can probably guess, I am not advocating people charge more, or that people should do what I did. I just looked at it as a chance to be more profitable, and certainly it could have backfired on me.

I really don't care what anybody else charges. Everybody has to make themselves happy, and keep their conscience clear.

I don't know what the big deal is here..... I normally quote $800.00 for a four hour event... But when I get a call for a wedding MONTHS away, I quote $1000, just because it is so far away and I feel that if I get it cool, if not okay...

I'm at about 50% on those gigs....

Chuck has beeen wanting to raise his price and it sounds like he needed a kick in the ass to do it,,,, so here comes this lady who can help him with that....

When I was booking schools, one of the first questions I asked when getting a call was... "what is your budget" because I always tried to work with the school... some of the bigger schools for their dance would have a DJ budget of $1000 cool,,, and some of the smaller schools would only have $500.00

So if I decided to take them both, I would use the same system, because that's how I roll... does that mean I was ripping off the bigger school, or being nice to the smaller school?

I think he is okay with what he did....

I had a bride ask me recently why it says on my site $795 for 2008 weddings and $895 for 2009 weddings?

I told her that the cost of business goes up all the time. I just added taking credit cards. That costs money. Music costs more. Gas costs more. It is all part of running a successful business.

She said, "Oh, that makes sense."

We set up an appointment, she sent her Mom instead. I don't think I will get this one. I don't want it really either. It was for June 6, 2008. I should get another call for that.

Edit: Forgot to say, Good Job Chuck!!!!

Given all the logic presented here, you owe me $149.95 Papa.

I actually meant to charge you $249.95 for the software, and service that goes with it. Had you told me up front, you were willing to pay that, I would have asked for it ;)

How could I be so stupid to ask my asking price (bangs head against wall).

You can send the check to my address on the website

Had your price been $149 or $249, I would have had the option to decline. You post prices on your site. I don't.

BTW, I think you SHOULD charge more....

Someone here has a signature..."experience doesn't cost, it pays".....

That's my quote MISTER!!!

I'm with you Papa! I raised my rates last year from $400/$600 to $500/$700 for 4 hours and had alot of free weekends. Believe it or not when I dropped it to $495-$695, the calls came back. So actually I got the price higher rate that I wanted(less $5). Go figure, it's a crazy bizz that we are in - I Love it!!!

oh Cap where art thou. we have another 95 salesman with success. Ed I too sell with the 95 at the end of my total. Though this Christmas I sold the one with 99 on the end.

Here's my thoughts, think on it for a moment:

This lady calls you, and is honest with you. Were you honest with her?

Did you charge her your normal rate, or see an opportunity to grab some extra dough, because she didn't know any better?

Is money all that matters...?

It is entirely possible that she was not honest (I’m cynical like that). Her budget may have been $900 and she was putting this story out there to see who would come in with the lowest bid just to beat out their imaginary competition.

Every good retailer knows the psychological impact of the .95 .97 & .99 price points.

So, you're saying I should have charged $895? :sqwink:

If you wanted to charge $900 and make it more palpable...then yes.

The average consumer sees $895 as 800 dollars, it's a trick people play on themselves to make purchases seem not so outrageous. (I know there are actual studies on this phenomenon, I'm just keeping it simple)
Try it on your wife next time you are out shopping. Check one of her receipts and later ask her how much that item cost...she will round down the actual retail price.
What sounds better to you...the new car for $25,000 or the same car for $24,995...Hey, that second one is only 24 thousand!

Actually Wayde, I.m well aware of the practice.... In thinking about opening a restaurant, I read on on how to price a menu. You probably know that better than I..

It said that if you are charging $8.25, it may as well be $8.95 to the customer because that is what they perceive it as... Also, items in the middle of a section of menu are the least profitable ones.... Smart menu planners make the most profitable items the 1st or last item in a section.
