Is it me or have the PO discs been devoid of useful music lately?

I liken it to the LA mindset. When my early mobile and club days took place in beautiful Southern California. The crowd was such fast paced if it was playing this week on the radio it had to be played at the venue but in less than a month make way for the newest new stuff. Old news was gone in a flash. Our whole society has that same access now to the music coming out of LA and NY cause of the internet meaning it no longer allows a shelf life. The Music Superhighway has been built and test driven. Buckle your seat belt we just put it into first gear.........

I've been feeling that way about my ERG. Maybe it's the state of music in general.
The shelf life of the hits is getting shorter and shorter. The state of the product these days is abysmal.

Not just a couple months ago, everyone was asking for My Humps and Hips Don't Lie. Now it's like they never existed. They have been replaced by Sexy Back and London Bridge. Those too will be gone in a flash and replaced by other trash.

Sexyback and London bridge have been replaced....

My Love and I wanna love you..acutally these are but allready also

It's just how music goes.. the shelf life of a song is about 3 weeks.

Maybe it's just because there is so much music out there. I think the majority of it is good, I'm not complaining I think it's great a song last 3 weeks, I hate playing the same song for a whole year every night.

Cam, all due respect, but no great song lasts only 3 weeks.
Great songs last years. I know this topic has been hashed on many threads and many forums, but todays music when it is created is created with revenues in mind.
No one is an artist anymore. By artist, I mean writer, musician, performer, arranger and sometimes producer of their own work. Those people did it out of passion, and then reaped the financial rewards. They truly earned their money and their fame.

Well, it can't be sucking too hard... people are buying it and listening to it. And people are requesting it.

JP makes an important point. It's all about the money. Songs about sex and cell phones with a subsonic throb sell today. They may not sell for very long but they're selling today. Tomorrow is another day and there will be more redundant rap and hiphop releases that sell. Eventually, the genre will cave in upon itself and something different will be the hottest thing.

It's gonna come to that. When a song or album is selling for only a week or so, it's not making any money for the record companies. It will cost more to produce the genre than it's worth. That's when the record execs will nix the genre. And you'd better believe they're not going to lose money for very long.

True, we may never again see the likes of Elton John, Phil Collins or other creative musicians dominate the airwaves. But much may be said for what the public is being fed. Real music will never die because it touches the human psyche. Sooner or later, an artist or group will appear with a catchy tune that takes the listening world by storm, everyone and his brother will be making a mad dash to imitate it and pop music will morph again.

Remember how we all moaned about disco in the late '70s? Disco didn't really die... it simply morphed into the mainstream of early '80s tunes.

I concur with Fred. Some of us find music sucking more and more much like our parents would scream for us to turn that music down well fortunately for me in this industry my father liked my music and I love my kids music. Music is a form of expression and so no matter what type it is there is appreciation in it from me.

Now there are but a couple genres or styles I cant enjoy. But trust me when I say truly 2 possibly three types out of a million others is a very small not liking margin. Sort of like a thread in which one of our own couldnt figure what the kids of today could find value in the music out now or how they could possibly dance to it.

Folks thats a classic message and sign its time to get out of that sector of music and let the young minded play it.

Promo Only sells more than one disc, pick the genre/type of music that suits your use.

I am a user of Promo only Mainstream Radio, Urban, Rock and Country.

Now my feelings are hurt because everyone is attacking me personally for my particular choice in music supplier. Well maybe none of you have attacked me personally but many are attacking my choice of suppliers so I think this thread should be closed! ;>)

like fred said, the reality is that rap is very popular today so that's what's being offered on new music discs. People that don't want that stuff really don't want new music, so i don't look for promo only to give me songs for those people anyway.

At weddings here in cleveland, the popular stuff lasts much longer than 3 weeks. Sexyback is still huge. It may be different in the club scene.

I found PO to be a little behind in some of the songs I needed. I still like them.
I just made the switch to another company and I am much happier. I still get P/O though.

Listening to the January Mainstream issue, it ain't bad. There are a few tracks that have some rappin' inserted but they're not the majority of what's on the disc.

Actually, there are several mellow tracks on the disc. :)

I admit some months are better than others....but I also think its marketing that keeps it that way....

I do PO Hiphop and Mainstream radio.

I'm also in the boat that music today focuses (in the club) on getting out the old beat with new rhymes as fast as absolutely possible.

As far as music that is truly good....well....that's very subjective. I can say that I really only like about 10% of the stuff I've heard over the last 2 years. Far less of it is really timeless.....

Also, when I do schools, i'm not afraid of Marvin Gaye....some kids really get it man, I never assume they only want the Jan. 07 disc all night....

Steve could you give me the copy specs on PO's discs?
LOL!!! I have helped feed new songs to a certain sub site cause the programmer needed some new music thinkers also just to clue you manytimes it becomes personal choices what goes on these discs even old stuff cause on the said sub we have been getting songs from six months ago and even four cuts from the new Lionel Ritchie album, 2 from the Tom Petty album and even two from Bob Seger. Not that I have a problem with either artist but some other chart toppers arent put on until they have been worn out lol three weeks late.

Jay Tea,

I am not saying PO is all that quick on getting some songs out, other songs on PO are hitting about as fast as they are hitting the market. As far as what hits the PO disc, I am not exactly sure how they are picked but I think they are picked according to what is predicted to chart. In the end what is going to drive whatever is useable on any suppliers disc, is what the listener is going to be into. I figure if there are 5 useable songs on any disc it was a fantastic purchase, three and it was a great purchase, two makes it OK and one well that is typical of any disc, album on the market today. Any of the albums you can purchase with 15 songs by the same artist generally by rule of thumb there is typically one song that is really going to be useable. Generally I find what is on PO to average four songs and have had some that hit as many as 10 songs requested in a normal night.

How long they are good for is another story but that can't be laid at the feet of PO or PC or any of the others comp suppliers.

Steve are those gray roots or blonde? LOL I was joking about the specs. Thanks for the analysis though I totally concurr. Most of my canadian brand subscription discs ( Radio Traxx ) will have at minimum 4 good hits but on occasion one or two and then theres the problem of when they have more than four but several of them have been asked for for a few weeks leaving me with shallow answers.

OOH Man I am glad I don't have to deal with this anymore. My biggest concern today is if I should pick up the Killers or Jet, lol. Sorry guys, but the one thing I will never miss is playing rap and hip/hop, one of the big reasons I got out of it. The entire "dj music" industry is going downhill fast, with little recovery anytime soon.

I get Promo Only and sometimes pick up a Nutraxx(their dance club mix series mostly). With Promo I get Country, Mainstream Radio, and Modern Rock.

Sometimes Promo misses a few here & there in each genre, but all in all, I'm happy with the service.

The only real issue I had with them is when they put K-Fed's "popazao" on mainstream last year! LOL! I thought "oh yer kidding me..." But then a few months later...Paris Hilton gets a couple releases on PO. Yay.

wait, rap or hip hop is making dj music going downhill? I thought that's what new wave music in the 80's was supposed to do. Or was it grunge rock or thrash metal in the 90's?
