Is it confidence or ego?

Good at what? Good at knowing 40 year old club music? Probably good at that. Good at being able to function as a mobile DJ today?? Different story.

Look at the DJs here that most would consider well above average .. not one has mentioned how some older lady told them they should be playing at (pick your place) .... NOT A SINGLE ONE HAS MENTIONED THIS ... You have mentioned it MANY times.
Stop assuming things you know nothing about me. I just don't play old school house music. I can play more up to date house music. I know I take a beating for not being the DJ that plays the latest hip hop song. My partner is great for that. I know it's about what a client wants and if that's what they want he can easily handle it. Me I would be lost. Besides most of that crap that is out that's today's music is stupid garbage made by a buch of no talent so called artist. Also I don't have just only older people who like what I do.

Lol you are the only one who wont answer questions. Not one person has every said because you are old you cant be good. What we have said is your issue is you inability or willingness to play anything besides 30-40 year old music.
Read my last post and you'll see you're wrong again. You said a place would not be interested in a 62 year old man Djing in a place. You base that upon your idea only very young people go out to a place. Again that's not true. I have played in a place where there was a nice mixture and that's because such a place wouldn't allow to only play today's music. You had to play a nice mixture for both young and older patrons could enjoy themselves. Also such places don't allow a DJ to play the hardcore stuff the whole time.

Mix,
I believe how old you "act" is more important than how old you actually are.

In our business, younger people generally don't want to hire people that SEEM old. Even older people don't want to hire someone that seems old. People want someone with experience, they just don't want to hire some old fogey that's out of touch with what they want. Has very little to do with actual age.

This has much more to do with your demeanor, your attitude, your outlook, and your abilities than your actual age. I have an acquaintance of mine who's nick name is Grampy. He's 47. But everything about him says "old". He shuffles when he walks, he's always talking about "the good old days". He's cranky. He only watches very old TV shows, so can't talk at all about anything current. Everyone guesses he's in his 60's.

On the other hand, A DJ friend of mine is 68. He's in great shape. He seems to know just about everything about any genre of music, including brand new hip hop. He's positive, energetic, and fun to be around. He can relate to many topics. I have no idea what music he likes personally. He's seems to find the best in any genre. No one would think he's 68.

I'm not saying someone has to be perfect. No one is. Good knows I'm not. But your posts do make you seem older than you are

Don't have to know the latest hip hop .. just have to know where to find it when someone wants it .. same with Rock, Pop, Country, ED, Techno, Salsa, whatever. It will be nearly impossible without club connections to be successful as a mobile House DJ .. just saying ..

Mix, nobody here is saying a 62 year old can't get good gigs. What we're referring to, is that you don't seem to.

Every gig you tell us about is either for very little money, or no money... or you bring in thousands of pounds of speakers to play for less than 20 people in a park.

The market is telling you something. Either you are very bad at telling people who you are and what you do. Or people aren't interested in booking what you do. Those are really the only options at this point.

Mix if I wanted to I could be the best DJ in the world playing hair metal, rock, and pop music from the 75-95 era and I'd probably love every gig. The problem is I would never make a dime at it....That's where you are at. The crowds for old house are dying off even the "younger" old house fans are getting old. With the exception of a few the youngest is in their 50's they aren't hanging out in bars

That being said there is nothing wrong with playing the music you like but you got to understand you aren't going to make money at it. Not many 25 year old brides want to hear old house all night and the bars are looking for drinkers not old people listening to Frankie Knuckles and Todd Terry

If you want to make some coin at this you need to learn music outside your time and genre. If you ain't learning you ain't earning

I did not read all the posts but on the original question I have battled many times with people.

I have said the same thing, that I think we have ego. I believe ego is what pushes us. It's what makes us want to be good at what we do, at having a clean set up, we want our events to rock so people like us and hire us. That push to go above and beyond so when you are driving home you are thinking "I rocked that party!" To me that is good ego.

Of course there is bad ego, or too much ego, but saying that I have an ego when it comes to my DJing, is not a bad thing. IMHO.

Maybe there's another term ...

When you believe you're good at something, and you are acknowledged as good at that thing, and people PAY YOU MONEY for that thing .. that's probably a GOOD ego.

When you believe your good, and only older ladies tell you you're good, and very few people offer to actually pay you for that thing .. BAD EGO.
