Ipods,smartphones and such

I have said that I will not play a random device brought to me to suffice a momentary urge for their favorite song etc. I had an issue long ago which has kept me from entrusting my reputation with a file or disc or whatever I havent had proper time to QC at an event. The groom actually slipped me a disc to play and dedicate to his mother in law. Anyone know a song called Freaks Of The Industry? Yeah I played the first minute of it I was pulling vinyl and realized the song was really bad I turned ejected and smashed the disc right in front of everyone and then apologized profusely to the mother and others the rest of the night. I most likely didnt gain a referral on that one. This was in Pasadena California in 1989. I will not touch another random unit or disc during an event unless proper revue has been done.

I really have to disagree with you on this one. As houston said, a human jukebox plays EVERYTHING that is requested, in the order they were requested. I certainly take requests. I don't play them all, and the ones I do play, I play in the order that I think will work the best. Just because I take requests doesn't mean I can no longer decide what to play and what not to.

Shockingly, every once in a while, someone requests a song that will work. Even more amazing, sometimes the song they request I don't have. It's not often...but it happens.

I don't get on the mic and tell everyone to bring me their ipods or smart phones. But if someone asks if I can, I say "bring it to me and we'll try". Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. It's a rare thing and I've never had multiple people do it. If it did come up, I would handle it like I did the first time. "Bring it to me and we'll see".

I will do whatever it takes to make the evening better for my clients. If a DJ doesn't want to do it, or doesn't feel comfortable doing it, I don't think it's a big deal, as I said...it's a rare thing. It's just a choice I make.

But I do believe you really have it wrong to suggest that playing a song that someone else provided makes one a human Juke box

See! Even I learned something from this thread ....and that is to make sure the person's Phone is on Airplane mode. I never thought of that before you guys brought it up. Thanks for starting this thread Bizzy.

Wow, yeah, that was bad. On a side note, it's a good thing she's hot cause she sure can't sing! ;)

I hate things that could potentially make me look bad so I do not allow it. If the venue has wi-fi then I will purchase it myself if I think it will 'make' the party. The only time I have let someone plug in an iPod type device was for something that was arranged ahead of time. Once the MC had a whack of Greek music the family wanted played which I knew about ahead of time but the guy wouldn't send it to me. Another time, a dance team came in to perform so they plugged in their iPod. You should see their faces when I tell them that I will happily hook it up for them but will not operate it. I don't even own a flipping iPod so I obviously do not know how to use it. Just press play, yeah sure. Then I have to cue a different track? I think not.
 
I agree that I would rather buy the song instead of using an ipod. I always try that first

Few times that come to mind in recent years when i used someone's ipod at an event.

1)The groom was writing a song for their first dance. Final planning meeting, they said he ran out of time and it wasn't going to happen and they picked something else. At the reception, the groom tells me he finished the song at the last minute, recorded it and put it on an ipod, and his fiance doesn't know, can I play it for their first dance? The bride LOVED it.

2) 90 minutes before a ceremony, the bride asks if she can change the song to what she is coming down the isle to. I could not find the song anywhere on the internet. Maid of honor had it on her ipod. Problem solved.

3)50th wedding anniversary. Daughter asks me if I have a song that was her parent's first dance 50 years ago. Didn't have it. Couldn't find it. Her ipod did.
