Please be kind with me making this thread. I can do more then just play in a bar. With that said I played in the bar Friday night. My friend had another job to do down the street from the bar and they got me to cover the bar that night. He came in later just to support me. He's really a great guy. He's the one that kept talking to one of the managers to get me to cover the bar when he can't make it because he has another gig some where else.
I took it because I didn't have a booked gig and no need of having the equipment sit in the basement when it can be used to make some money. Not a lot as bars go but like I've said before I don't do bars just to make some money. It keeps me busy and people get to know that I'm a DJ. People that wouldn't know I'm a DJ.
My friend always jokes with me about how he has to watch out for me because I'm getting ready to take his job. He told me he just says that as a compliment. He's been playing in the same bar over 22 years. He has nothing to worry about.
Now on to why I'm the bars preferred DJ when either of the 2 DJ's that play there can't make it. My friend told me why that is. He said that they have had others come in there that the regulars who come to this bar were not happy with. They would then let it be known to the manager about them not being pleased with that DJ. My friend told me 3 big problems some of them had. They didn't know how to read the crowd. Their setup was ugly or their equipment sounded horrible.
So now he told me I'm # 1 on their list of DJ's to contact to come play at this bar. That's a good feeling. I rocked them out Friday night. There were 3 issues that night. The first one was right before I was to begin playing. My starting time for this bar on Friday nights is 9pm. The jukebox was playing and a lady that comes to the bar wanted me to just start playing because she didn't like the song playing on the jukebox. I told her I couldn't and she told me I could. I told her I couldn't start playing because someone had put their money in the jukebox and that would be disrespectful for me to start playing while the jukebox was playing a song. That was the last song and I did start playing after that.
This night I got to play some stuff that I normally don't get to play but it worked well. I was surprised I could play certain songs and my friend was surprised too.
The other thing was that the other manager finally got on the mic and announced that it was about an hour to go before I'm to stop playing and if the crowd didn't cut things out he would just stop me from playing and have everyone leave the bar. It didn't happen though. I don't know what his issue was about what they were doing but if he did shut things down early I still would have gotten all the money due to me.
I was playing the last song and my friend made a mistake and made the plug come out of the socket shutting the music off. All I had to do was reset VDJ and I went and played the last song again which was the Wobble.
For me even though when I first started playing I really didn't want to play that night all went well. Not a lot of people bugging me with a ton of request. A few people came up to me to request a song and they were very nice. I just hate when someone thinks they need to tell you the DJ what to play next or they just keep bugging you all night long on the songs they want to hear. I can't do it but just once I've been tempted to say to a person like that go sit your ass down and leave me the FUNK alone.
So all in all a good night for me and I had fun even though I wasn't feeling like DJing that night at first. Just one of those times no matter if it was in the bar or a private event I didn't really feel up to playing. I surprised them that night. I brought in all 5 lights and had them all running that night. I just did that to see what it would all look like with me buying the new light. It was a very nice touch.
