Hey All,

I haven't been able to log on here in a while (besides at work). It's been a busy wedding and outdoor movie season for me so far. Then my home pc finally crapped out on me at the same time I was remodeling our bathroom.

I found a HP Pavilion on sale last weekend at Office Depot:

HP Pavilion Elite Media Center Desktop Computer with Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q6700

• 6GB DDR2 memory
• 750GB hard drive
• Reads & writes dual layer DVDs & CDs plus LightScribe™
• nVidia® Ge-Force™ 9500GS graphics card
• Integrated 802.11 b/g/n wireless LAN
• Watch, Pause, Rewind, and Record Live TV
• Windows Vista® Home Premium 64-bit Edition
Tower M9340F

Now it's time to learn about Vista and catch up on my 1500 unread messages here. :sqeek:

Nice Rig Keith, I am jealous! I bought an HP Pavilion back in February, they're nice computers. <--- Link to thread I got the AMD dual core in mine and cannot complain, I betcha the Intel is nicer though. Mine came along with a 22" monitor which is nice. Too bad the whole system is still up New York though, I miss it and wonder up much it's going to be to ship down to FL.

Vista is nice, I've had very few issues with it. You'll be flying along with the 64 Bit version if you're still using most 32 bit programs.

Thanks Dan. I was searching on WinDVD's site and trying to figure out what the min/recommended specs are for watching blueray on a PC. I saw that my model is more than able to handle it. At $899 I thought it was a fair deal?

I guess my first question is....what programs/processes use 64 bit?

Good job Keith and a good price! Me and my HP are very happy. Keep it cool and no worries.

VISTA TIP: Did you know that you can choose to install and run all your old software as if it were under XP? You can by right clicking on you installer/exe files.

 At $899 that was a steal!!

Off the top of my head I don't know of any program that uses 64 Bit natively other than Windows itself. Maybe some higher end video and audio production applications. You will still notice the speed boost even when running "old school" 32 bit apps.

Other than that I haven't had the pleasure of watching a Blu Ray yet.. Is it that much better?

I don't have a blueray dvd drive yet, but it will probably be the only upgrade I make to this PC. I want to get a notebook with the same specs for my outdoor movie rig.

As far as a difference, it depends on what TV/Projector you have. The monitor connection from the video card has HDMI and DVI connections. Maybe I'll use the Sanyo 32" HDTV I just bought for karaoke/small slideshows with this pc.

I have noticed under the start menu there is an Internet Explorer 64-bit shortcut. I wonder how many web sites are compatable?

You can visit any website with any browser. In a nutshell any browser simply translates raw HTML for display as a web page. Internet Explorer with the 64 bit notation simply means that the program itself is written for 64 bit, it may run a little faster than 32 bit Internet Explorer on the same machine. Although you may have issues finding plugins like Flash for the 64 bit IE.

Actually you said you have a quad core processor, so it's like having a dual core 64 bit processor I believe. Rick knows more about the hardware side of things than I maybe he'll pop in and fill us in. I'm pretty sure he runs 64bit Vista so he may have some tips for you. :)

I dont think you will

not even CAD software uses the full 64bit

here I am making up 5x more new ones and sorting them so they do certain jobs

1x is a server with 5x sata raid bay that is hot swapable.. and 2gb of ram 3.0gig p4 (just average) and the 5x hdd's are all 1 TB hdd's except the OS which will be a 80GB hdd pata and a dvdrw burner

2x systems that are set for DVD and Audio only 1x of them is full of 3x 500GB hdd's in sata

then my main machine is being rebuilt but I am still tossing up what it will be

oh I have to make up a bot server that has freebsd on it as well (desktop)
with 1gb ram and a 320 pata hdd

so not much here :)
