I need a GPS

All techno-bling. A cellphone with voice communication is all I will ever want, if I ever reach the cell phone stage.

It's small enough to fit in your pocket.

Yeah, no problem Jon.

Alright Rob, no more toys for you!

GPS on an iPhone would be great, except that they don't allow anyone to write a turn by turn application for it.

I don't own an iPhone, but might have considered it if turn by turn GPS were available on it. It's the only thing that could get me to go with AT&T service currently.

Now I could see how GPS turn by turn on phone with a display as large as an Iphone could work. On a traditional phone with a small screen it seems it would be hard to see the map. If the trend in phones is to make them with bigger screens like the Iphone, I like it.

To me, the idea of buying a separate GPS is obsolete.

New phones from Blackberry, Samsung, and the Apple I-Phone are coming out with GPS in the phone.

My next cell phone that I buy will probably have GPS included in the package!

i have verizon and my phone has gps on it. to use it, its 10 bucks a month, plus tax. Don't know about other carriers, but that seems a little pricy to me.

When you figure it's $60-70 for updated maps each year on a traditional GPS unit, it does seem a bit expensive. i'd say $5 per month is more reasonable, but that's me.

The phone already gets you for a data plan as it is, and this would be necessary for the GPS application, making it more expensive yet..

Yeah, I'm trying to keep the monthly bills down. No data plan for us. I don't even use text messaging. My kids who are 18 and 20 use it constantly, but being kind of old, I just didn't see the need or benefit.

If I want to tell someone something or ask them something, I call them, discuss whatever it is or leave a message, done and done. I just don't see myself ever using text messaging much. That could change as I use it. No way would I pay for it. Until I renewed my plan recently it was an add on. Now it's included and as such I am going to give it a whorl.

I can see text messaging being used for humorous purposes . . .

As far as $60+ for updated maps, WTF???

Are there GPS units where you don't have to pay that?

That's just if you want the updated software/maps.... if you are in an area where little changes with your road systems... you may only want to update just before a long trip outside of your area or to say a big metropolitan area such as Chicago where the streets change when the wind changes.

I just bought the Nuvi 200W, and it has the 2009 maps included, but I suspect that in a couple years I'll want to update it with newer maps. A friend has a fancier Nuvi that's older, and it just started nagging him that the maps are over a year old.

Yes, the map updates run about this at the local walmart, but as stated, aren't required.

I would suspect that the maps on a phone GPS would be constantly updated, and not actually stored on your phone, but viewed via the phones browser app, using an actual internet data connection.

I don't know this to be true.

Well, I've been looking. I almost bid on a Nuvi 750 on ebay. That thing has a lot more features and I'd prefer to have them. It's more money and I usually look for high value and lower priced products, but for this I'm going to splurge an extra $50 or $60. I figure in a year or two I can pass it down to my son or daughter or sell it on ebay and get the latest and greatest.

Learned from shopping for my daughter's GPS:

1) Get one that will speak the actual street names - not just "turn left in 50 feet", but "turn left at Oak Avenue in 50 feet". It makes a big difference when keeping your eyes on the road and ears on the unit.

2) Try to get a wide screen model. Older eyes will appreciate it.

3) Yes, they are the hot item for car thieves. Buy one of those small bean bag type dash mounts instead of using the supplied windshield mount. Using this allows you to remove ALL evidence of a GPS in seconds.
