So did she book you to do the wedding?
Meeting with her at the venue Thursday. Pretty sure I will close the deal. She wanted to make sure she had a venue (her last email to me indicated this is the third place she tried and they had an opening that worked for her).

I've done several last minute weddings and/or gigs. A couple of them within one week, and one in two days. Most of the ones that I've done have been destination weddings and they were not planning on a big reception when they returned home.

We have a wedding to do. It was anticipated to be November 16th of this year. My best friends niece is getting married and they want us to come do the wedding. I found out from my best friends wife they are postponing the wedding till some time next year. The problem they are having is finding a venue to have the wedding. The couple live in Penn, and wanted it out there. The people that live here wanted the wedding here somewhere in Jersey.

The other issue I found out that they have is the venues they were looking at having the wedding were costly and the family as a whole don't have the money to help them with this wedding. So they are planning on saving up their money and have it some time next year. I suggested instead of having it in a fancy catering hall that they pick a nice VFW/Knights Of Columbus hall and have it there. If they decided to go that route then the family could help them out with that because those places don't charge much to have an event in their venue. Most of those places charge less then 1k to rent the hall out. After that they could have someone cater the food and decorate the hall themselves saving them plenty of money. It's their choice.

The point I'm making in this post they are planning way ahead of time on having this wedding. I knew they wanted us to do the wedding over 3 months ago. The big question is how many brides properly plan out having their wedding? I know some will say who cares but I find those who plan their wedding out way in advance are mainly a lot easier to work with and usually have a good ideal on what they want for their wedding.

the point is they don't have alot of money and got you to do it for cheap if they ever do get married.

No the point is we're family and they know that I know how to get the job done right and leave them happy with my work. Any way just for you my best friends sister is the one that are paying us when it does happen. I don't know what that will be but I know it will be more then $150.00. (hint, hint)

Now if you paid attention they were expecting family members to pitch in with getting the wedding paid for and once they found out what it would take for where they want their wedding, they realized they don't have the money to help out. They have to survive themselves. Also like I said I suggested a cheaper alternative if they don't have the money. That's what a lot of brides are doing today. I was told they are going to save up their money and do it at a later date. I usually don't get excited about doing an event but I'm excited about this one because of who is getting married and how close I am to the family.

My best friends mother died last year and it was like my own mother had died. That's how close we are. Now Jimmy if it were you doing this wedding and it was your best friends niece getting married how much would you charge?

Ive done weddings on an hours notice. I've done over 1000 weddings and although they are tailored it's not that complicated to go on short notice and make it a success

If it was my best friens niece getting married they would get chraged my normal rate $1199.00 minues a $100 discount. No I do not do things cheap for friend or family unless it is my mother, father or siblings. Hint hint I like to make money for doing a job not giving away things just so I can say I am a DJ.

I bought a couple of DVD's from Alan Berg and a book. One of the DVD's is about sales. In that DVD he states to not lower your price to meet another ones price. He also mentions to not lower your price period. Just give them your price and keep it at that.

If need be offer them more for the price you want them to pay. Great advice that I need to follow.

Mix you are spending good money on DVDs and getting the same advice you are getting here and ignoring. That being said if you are going to follow advice Alan Berg is a good one to follow

Now I think you have something. I'm not a big Berg fan (I think he buys too much into the whole "over-charging automatically makes you a premium vendor" thing) but that advice is spot-on. You offer your price but don't ever back down on price. If they object, and not every time do you do this, add value (add-ons). Many times, these brides are just intent on getting a deal but they're wanting the best and if you have a higher price they often will view you as the "I want him" guy. Cutting your price often will remove you as the best in their eyes.
