Sounds like you should use paypal then, but if you do you really need to take it seriously and get it set up like a real business. Use your business bank account or open a new one specifically for Paypal, you can use the debit card for the account as a credit card on file...just to cover bases. Get the Paypal Debit card like I said and you can easily spend the money as soon as you get it...on equipment or personal expenses, whatever you need.

It might take a few weeks to get everything set up because of your complications, but once you do it should be very convenient for you. Paypal can be your payment processing company, with the added convenience for your customers of privacy, paying online...and your bands can turn their iTunes revenues from their paypal account to yours.

In the long run, Paypal has cheaper rates if you get a special business account...which you might be able to if you process $5,000 a month or so. Good luck. Make lotsa money.

Aaron,

I planned on getting the debit card once everything was set up.

I really don't have a problem with Paypal in regards to the actual service, what I have the problem with is that I sent out invoices through them, and never once was told I would have to be verified in order to collect the payments. I had payments coming in, and never once got any indication of this.

They also will not tell me why I can not add the credit card to the account. No one has an answer to that at all.

The reason this is all coming to a head now is because since I just opened back up for business, the first wave of invoices have gone out and the payments are now starting to come in.

I did not use paypal last time I had the company going, so this was never an issue.

Patrick,

Welcome to big brother land :sqwink:

You refused to read the fine print, went over the speed limit by one mile per hour, and now you have to pay the piper. You are a "criminal" in society.

Get used to not being in control of your life anymore... ;)

Not true.

The last band to pay me just did a transfer right from their paypal account into mine, and there was an $8 fee on my end (there were transferring 250 and I only got 242)

Yes, you are right when you recieve money from another paypal user or credit card paid to your paypal account they charge a fee....

However, it is free to transfer from and to your paypal account to any bank account you have tied to your paypal account it just takes 2-3 days to transfer.

I too went balistic on them today! I was really getting irritated with the fact that everytime I used my Paypal Debit card it was deducting funds from my Teachers account instead of my Primary account at Chase...

Turns out it was my fault all along... I didn't know that just because I had my Primary accounts set to my Chase account that I had to go and change my Paypal Debit card back up funding source as well... I thought if I changed one both would change and in fact never even thought about it having to be done that way.

I'm such a numb nutz and it was all my fault... not theirs... but, I was soooooo ready to yank my account right then and there.

Patrick that is why I use my CJB accounts

I can create what ever I like how I like what I do with them at any time
its not locked into one email account and when say a website closes I can redirect it again
thats why I have http://www.trebleclefdj.cjb.net

I have never had hassles ever since I have had the account at paypal (on my 3rd one now)

I would have had the shotgun loaded halfway through this nightmare. I hate doing business with incompetent people. No patience for this kind of thing.

Oh this just gets better!!!

I got to thinking, and back when I was DJing, I NEVER took credit cards, only cash and checks. I also didn't remember buying anything online that was not paid for with my card, so I (once again) called paypal to ask them what the $40 (it's actually $39.28) balance was for:

"Inactive account service fee."

I asked them what that meant, and the person could not tell me. I asked them if any transactions had been on that account.

"only the service fee."

what a load of crap - if thats how they do business then we all should get out of it!

I really don't care about paying the 40 bucks, all I want it to be able to have access to the money.

I emailed them again last night, and still have not heard back from them. I am just kind of at their mercy now, because they can not do anything over the phone for some reason.

They're not really out to get you Patrick -- it's merely a conspiracy theory...

Keep an eye out, in case they have an inspection and seatbelt check near yer house :sqerr: :sqlaugh:

They can have all the inspection and seat belt checks they want.

You don't have to get shoes inspected by the state, and seat belts are not required for walking :sqwink:

I use Google Checkout and have been since it was in beta - It is wonderful as my TOS are never read by the customer and they always pay up front. My TOS due to the nature of my business have to sway my way to avoid legal hassle.

Google Checkout is my only method of transaction these days and it also helps my bookeeper as I just send her the file ;)

Google take less as a payment too - just a teeny weeny cut.

I love Google.

For small SEO jobs (like guys here) I use my Amazon wishlist as that cuts out the t***** man

Davy,

I signed up for Google check out yesterday, but as I already said, most of the bands I work with have snocap and itunes accounts for their music, and their sales are directly filtered to paypal accounts, so it is easier for them to do a quick transfer to me in there.

I have calmed down now and just accepted the fact that I am going to have to use some personal funds until this gets straighten out

But Patrick, that's not really why they are there...

You have been red-flagged by PP, and now you are on the terrorist watch list -- just wait till you try to get on a plane... :sqerr: :sqeek:

Keep an eye over yer shoulder -- especially when walking at night.........................................

Patrick FWIW,

I was waiting to be assisted by my insurance agent, and found a Fortune Small Business magazine. An article read... when accepting payments, trust is a two way street. Your client (band, vendor, and scanity clothed girl on the side of the street) must trust that you are going to deliver the promised service, and you must have some degree of trust that you will get paid.

The laws are pretty clear for people not paying small businesses, there are plenty of judges willing to quickly rule in the buisness' favor. In our county, they make it real easy to go after somebody after we have successfully CMA with certified letters, proof of purchase, etc.

Patrick, if you don't mind me asking, why would you choose not to accept any other forms of payment, not even the mighty dollar? Did somebody ever pass a phony off to you or something ;).

Again FWIW, why not get a credit card processing service, you'll shell out about the same amount in fees, and it will be easier for the band/individual to pay you. Cash is easy as long as your paid up front (or at least 50% down). Check can be reliable as long as you cash at their bank, most people have a well known bank account, provided they write your name instead of your business name. If not bring down a DBA or other identifying document, along with your DL and they should be able to cash it.

Travis,

When I was doing this last year, I only accepted checks or MO because I did not want to hassle with credit cards. That was also when the service was a yearly service and I was the exclusive rep for the band.

Now, I have changed the model, so that the bill is done monthly, and I am not an exclusive agent for the band. So every month, the band gets an invoice sent to them. It may be for only one or 2 shows, which would only be $30, or it may be for a larger amount depending on if they took up the management option as well.

As a result, I could potentially be sending invoices out to up to 20 or 30 bands a month for a large number or shows/services. It is much simpler and easier to keep track of everything in paypal, where I can simply make the templates up, plop in the number or shows or services for each band, fire it off to them, and be paid pretty much within a day or two. Accepting other payments would just make the process very complicated on a month to month basis.

The reason I am trying to avoid actually going to a credit processing format is because, as I have already said, 99% of the bands I work with use snocap and itunes to sell their music, and those payments go straight into their paypal accounts. So it is much simpler for everyone involved to just do everything in one place.

I want to make it clear, I LOVE the system Paypal has set up, and I love how easy it is for me to do the billing. I did not start the company back up until mid-May, and this batch of invoices was the first one to go out since starting back up.

My issue has now turned from my original rant (which I have already sent the $40 MO off for and should be cleared up in 4-6 weeks, gggrrrr) to now not hearing ANYTHING from the department that is supposely going to get back with me in 24 hours, last Monday. This department has no phone number to call, and only works through email, so I am just in the waiting game of finding out why my Creidt Card can not be added to the account. Once I have a way to move the money in and out of my account, I will be happy with the service itself.
