Have you lost your mind? I could have purchased them with Cash but why not use over $1K (Actually it was more then the three lights I purchased) in someone else's money for free.[/QUOTE

No Canute, my mind is still here. Read the links Kirby posted, he gets it.

OK I will take the time to explain MY situation. I never purchase something that I cannot afford or pay cash to buy. I always negotiate a discount, especially in cases of gear. I am wary about my credit standing so the warnings in those Blogs do not hit home for me. So with all that being said, how can I go wrong with using someone else's money to make purchases Interest Free with a discount on the price? Maybe Kirby gets it because it applied to his standing. I can't fault him for that as it is his prerogative. I enjoy my Rewards points from American Express and Money Back checks from Discover Card. I know how to use Credit to MY benefit. I can't speak for others who don't know how to do the same. I try to keep my cash money fluid!

Also lets suppose you purchase something for Cash and you have a defective product which the Seller refuses to make right, you have little or no recourse. With a Credit card or Loan Type Payment you have loads of recourse. That is worth its weight in gold.

Oh by the way, here are some Positive Articles to refute the negative ones : Using other people's money!

Canute,

Can I use some of your money? You seem to be rich (or the redhead pays all your bills), since you're here more than me...

As stated earlier, there are studies that show you will spend more on credit than on a cash basis.
I believe that was my quote so I will answer. That is just one study which may apply to some and not others. If one knows how to properly manage credit then there are more advantages to be realized by using credit. Credit can be everything including such things as using an American Express for all purchases and payments during the month and paying off the entire bill when the statement arrives. In the meantime, you are racking up Reward Points which can be redeemed for items.

Save the whales -- trade them in for valuable prizes :)

Based upon your logic, credit is sort of like skee ball tickets -- if you get enough, you can get a stuffed little animal...

That was meant for Canute, not you Rick

Canute I remember a case where a man was paying off all his bills on a cc as soon as his statement came in. They wanted to take his cc away from him because they couldn't make any money off of him for paying the bill in full each time.

Those companies make their money off of interest. Most people don't see a cc as cash so charge it. So as soon as a person sees something they want then they whip out a card they can use to charge it. Most of the time they purchase something that they can't pay off as soon as the bill comes in. So then they send the minimum payment the company is asking for. A lot of people don't have the money to spend to double the amount of the minimum payment. Now by sending in the minimum the company is asking for mostly gets eaten up by the interest. It barely touches the principle. Thus that's why it looks like the bill isn't getting paid or at least not like we would want it.

The real problem is that they want you to think you need credit. It's a luxury item and if you don't handle it properly can get you in trouble. The 2 biggest things I think you need a good credit score for are if you're looking to buy a new car or a house. After that what's the point?

Have you ever had an American Express or Diners Club Card? Apparently not! Because if you did you would know that they want the whole balance paid off each cycle. The rewards you get is not out of some book. It is points that you can use instead of Cash. I have purchased many things on Amazon such as Cables etc with my rewards points. Then on top of that, from the same use of those cards I get additional Loyalty Reward points from Manufacturers such as ADJ.

They want you to pay off your purchase as soon as you get your statement. What if you don't have the money to pay it all off or some unexpected emergency comes up and you can't pay the bill?

Another trick that is used is for example when looking to buy a new car some will offer you 0% interest for so many years. They already got it figured out that at least one month out of the contract for the car you won't be able to pay on time and that will void out the existing contract and now comes the interest fees. Along with whatever penalties they decide to tack on which is normally in the fine print. They sucker a lot of people into buy a new car that way.

Foe me I say if you can do without a cc that's the best thing.

Those are charge cards. If you don't have the means to pay the bill by the statement date then you probably shouldn't use the card. Ive held both cards for corporate expenses and the company allows us to use them for personal items so long as you can pay the bill. I have had former colleagues rack up thousands in debt on these cards that they couldnt pay even after a payment plan. Ultimately they lost their jobs because of it.

Not true. Its not a trick, its more preparation and planning on the buyers end. I have had 2 cars with 0% one 10 years ago and another last year. So long as you pay your bills on time there are no surprises.

"Have you ever had an American Express..."

Yes -- that's one of the main reasons I had to file for bankruptcy many years ago. My ex wife liked to use it a bit too much.

The other problem, is many vendors will not accept them, because the fees are too high.

So I use my debit card mostly -- put the money in first, and then make a purchase.

I have not found any place in Houston as yet that does not accept American Express. Even the little Convenience Stores and Dollar stores do. One of the benefits of living in a big City.

For the most part, the general public cannot use 'so-called-free-money' .... they believe it's a great deal, thinking they'll have the money in (insert time frame here) to pay it off and won't incur any interest or finance charges. Unfortunately, for the most part, and why companies offer these things, is that the person doesn't have the money and then has to pay the balance over time. Now, the original amount has incurred interest (typically from the beginning) and possibly finance charges and will pay more than if they would have saved the cash in the first place and only purchased it when they had enough money to pay for it.

While it's great that some can utilize the money, I still don't recommend the practice to anyone.

This is from the state that wants to secede from the union -- I'm not surprised.

I buy mostly online, except for Haleem's Mini Mart and IED Lab. Heck, I can get a Stinger -- but you have to pay cash for them. They're not cheap. I live next to the largest city in the country, and most places will not accept AMEX.

I think you village idiots in Texass, should just secede, and go back to Mexico, or where ever you came from.

Apparently it's -40 in Hell Randy and I agree :)

While it's a sound financial practice for those who can handle it it's very unsound for most. If you don't have the cash backup you shouldn't take the loan

Most places around here accept AMEX. I've had a few gas stations and Chinese joints not accept it.
