How much different is your DJ personality vs. your daily personality?

I don't think anyone can just "change" their personality type simply by turning on a microphone. Those whom I've seen try - simply come off like one of those people with a huge forced smile when you try to take their picture.

If you are not an "entertainer" type personality (think Robin Williams, Jim Carey, Jerry Lewis, etc.) then your presentations are going to remain in the realm of what you know you are capable of. It simply means your going to remain more reserved and on task - without placing a lot of extraneous focus on yourself.

If you are not a great dancer or dance instructor, then it is not likely you are going to go out on the floor and do follow-alongs. That would not preclude you however, from prompting and encouraging people on the mic.

Your best presentation is going to be the one done in the style that makes you the most comfortable; and because it is your best style - you'll also grow a following of customers who appreciate that style.

Trying to be 1% better by emulating someone else's style or ideas is counter productive.

Well Papa, I guess that's a good thing!

I feel that when I'm DJing, the better parts of my personality show. I can be pessimistic sometimes, so that goes away. I also feel like I smile more, especially for weddings. It's probably the emotions of the day and the fact that I can't screw up. I always try to do my best when I'm DJing.

You can not change your personality type, however you can adjust your performance to the job at hand. For instance, and this is probably how Chuck came to this question, I also do Bubble Parties for the 3-6 age group, as does Chuck. For those shows, I am over the top zany and the kids love it. I'm playing to the audience. When we do the Chicken Dance, during the part where you are supposed to swing around and dance in a circle, I scream out "everybody run around like a chicken" and do the same myself. It's utter mayhem and totally fun...and one of the main reasons I don't cross promote Bubble Parties with my wedding business. I couldn't possibly imagine a teacher seeing me at a Bubble Party and saying "oh yea, I have GOT to have him at my wedding", haha.

Don't get me wrong, I don't turn into a stiff board for a wedding, but again, you've got to know and be able to play to your audience (without "faking it").

I am not saying that I change my personality, I am saying my show personality "turns on" when I am doing a show, there is a difference in the way I am perceived by people who see me at a show and then see me out in public at a store or somewhere!

I have had many people comment on the differences they see between the time I am working and once the show is shut down and I start breaking down. I actually have several different personas that come into play depending what type of gig I am doing!

At 3 of my karaoke shows I am the lovable dirty old man, at another I am reserved but friendly at two others I am family (kid) friendly, at weddings I am quiet reserved, private parties it depends on the crowd which persona comes out!

I don't know if any of you "entertainers" know what acting is or not but a good actor uses life experiences to quantify their character which comes across as real and not faked! But then I do this for a living!:sqwink: I am willing to bet that 80% of you who say that you are the same on and off stage do the "radio DJ" voice when you are own stage and do not use it when you are off, (but that only applies to those who can):sqlaugh:!

I used to do a physical comedy routine at a resort during my DJ show where I would teach dancing! I would stratigically place a couple of chairs along the edge of the dance floor and as I began to show the audience some special moves I would become entangled in one of the chairs and fall around the dance floor getting out of the entanglement with one chair only to fall into another and then another, at first even the staff at the resort thought it was a "real accident"! But it always loosened up the crowd and got them dancing early!

I think most people will agree that I am an azzhole 24 X 7 X 365. :sqlaugh:

Seriously, I'm generally an easy going, fit in kind of person.

I like to joke and play but when in an unfamiliar group I take the time to read the crowd so it may seem like I'm an introvert at first. I listen and watch body language until I get a good feel fro the group.

As to DJing, the client lets me know their expectations. If they want the cheesy DJ, then that's what they get. If they want the formal MC, then they can have it. But, also, I don't force that on their guests, so I do some reading as well. Most get an energetic MC that knows when to tone it down.

Listen Mr. O, on behalf myself, Tuck, Rick, and any and all DJ forum moderators, you have no right to make such a claim.

To do so offends those of that have worked diligently and tirelssly to attain such status and if we need anymore we'll breed 'em. You have to be born one, kinda like you have to be born with certain attributes that makes finding comfortable trousers very difficult. But again, how would you know?:sqlaugh:

I don't really know if I'm different when on stage vs. off.... I know I dance around and bop my head to the music when on stage but, I do that off stage too... if there's something good on the radio you are likely to either catch me dancing or singing... although if you catch me dancing I have that "guy having a siezure" style of dance moves.... LOL

Im pretty much the fun loving guy most get to know and love and you wont find any one more passioned for this business. Unfortunately on occasion I am labeled amongst Enigma labeled folks as I speak in riddles as if I came from another time or sense of humor world. If ya know me either ya love me or hate me. Not any inbetween. Im cool with that and the clients who like me end up loving what I end up giving in the end. I prefer to create a relationship.

I don't know about changing personalities, but I show different persona's. Day job serious and highly motivated. DJ'ing high energy and fun. Around family and friends just kinda laid back enjoying life.

I'm fairly shy/reserved most of the time. Until you put a mic in front of me (or a few drinks). The only bad combination is a mic and MORE than a few drinks.
