How do you deal with a potential client who wants a price quote right away?

I hear you and I understand. In this park what you and others have suggested as far as equipment is concerned would not cut it for the space we will be in and the people attending the event.

Now we have an upcoming event we will be doing in Branch Brook Park the last Saturday in August again. We will probably bring in 2 double 15's, 2 monitors and 2 subs for that event. We could bring more but for the amount the guy wants to pay not happening. We're doing him a big favor doing it for the price he pays us. 2 different types of events and crowds.
The space doesn't look large enough to be too concerned on amount of gear .. maybe one of the NJ members can visit on 6/1 and let us know how it sounded.

You may hear us, but you certainly don't understand. If you understood, then you would comprehend and heed the advice of professionals that have been there and done that.
Trust me what one DJ said he would bring to the park 2 12" tops and 2 subs would be a joke. The people attending the event would leave the park laughing and never to return with that DJ being there. What that DJ suggested he would use wouldn't even come close to what is needed!!!!!!!!!!

Is it the quantity or the quality mix? My sound system can handle a gym of 600-700 easily. Have you ever been to the pallazo ballroom at the Venetian in Garfield? It’s about 5x the size of those courts and yet people still bring in just 2 tops and 2 subs

You do know that you’re arguing with Mix about DJing in a park, on a fenced in court with no tables, chairs, food, no stage, no artists performing. Just a DJ with equipment playing music. Now I am not saying that it doesn’t happen. For me it was in 1977, I was in High School, we booked house parties after playing. After H.S.in 1978 it stopped & we moved on to colleges, clubs, and Private parties at catering halls. Back over 40 years ago in the park you brought everything you had, Mainly because you didn’t have much then, and played as loud as you could. Oh, the Things you used to do when you were young.

This is a wide open space and no/ fenced in. The fence is a wire fence. It's not confined to a certain area like a room with a dance floor section. Remember this is outside. We're just bringing what others have brought to the table in this park at the Handball Court.

First things first. We don't have 12" tops. That is what another DJ on here said they would bring along with a pair of subs. I told them people would laugh at that system in there as the people who come there are used to DJs bringing much more than that. In there that would sound like a regular boombox from back in the day.

You also said you were "bringing what others have brought" yet the only reference to what others might bring is 2 12" tops and 2 subs. Just trying to keep up.

And people would only laugh if the DJ was lame. A good dj could rock the park with a pair of tops and a pair of subs.

Mix .. you don't need many tops outside (other than for horizontal coverage) and if you run subs, there is no substantial difference between 12" or 15" tops .. in fact, the 12" tops will sound BETTER usually (again with subs), but you would know that if you listened to a proper setup. You do need multiple subs outside since the bass doesn't carry as far typically.

I saw a Jamaican event in downtown Boston using a single pair of JBL SRX 712 (12" two-way) tops (I walked down during a break to check) and 4 double 18" subs cover an area about 300 feet wide and I was almost 400 feet back and it sounded fine at the back where I was standing.

Steve,
You have to understand the person who is going to hire you for a wedding, or nice private event in a catering hall, you know the well paying events, is going to go down a park to see and hire a DJ, if he has a big powerful system. We all been doing it wrong. Tomorrow I am calling the guy who brought my four Cerwin Vega T-36s and buy them back. I might have another wedding in 6 months and I want to make sure low end. Wink & a nod.

No DJ has ever brought in a system like that to that part of the park. At least no DJ I know of or would they. Again another DJ on here said that's what they would bring. I stand by what I said. That would not be good enough no matter what model speakers you bring.

I guess that’s why your avg event gets you paid less than what my assistant makes. You def are the expert.

Anyways, just because you don’t know if any DJ, doesn’t mean that it’s still right or wrong. I mean hey if you wanna go all out, at least do it right with an array system
