LOL I love bustin your hump....

Ya must be in cahoots with the Goddess. She's many years my junior. Can't seem to undersand why I sometimes prefer working with an IBM Selectric II when I have a perfectly good PC sitting right next to it (yes, I mostly use the PC, but for quick letters or notes I prefer the typewriter). Then I get " Well, why don't I just go get ya a rock and chisel?" or some such. Sometimes I do it just to get her going....:sqwink::sqlaugh:

Do We Try To Change The Techno-speed Mentality?

Do we Try To Change The Techno-Speed Mentality?

Let's travel on back to those days of yesteryear- about 25 years. There were 35-40% fewer people in any given area of the U.S. If you lived in suburbia, travel time was estimated in miles only, and traffic didn't really enter into it. Proper manners, though more needed now, were in use more then. We still said hi or waved to the neighbors, even if we didn't normally hang out with them. We only went to the supermarket for weekly shopping, and bought little stuff at the candy store or deli, where we know the owner, and might stay a bit and have a cup of coffee. No really huge lines, but if you had to wait, you ended up having conversations with others in line.

In short, we interacted and socialized with other people.

Fast forward to now: We run to the supermarket for a loaf of bread, the lines are long, traffic counts, There are more people, there's no "alone" time, so we make our own by isolating ourselves with whatever our earphones are connected to- no conversation, less manners, no unplanned socializing.

The above is merely a comparson in lifestyles.

Now let's talk about karaoke. There are some hosts whose style is more technically oriented. Not just due to the use of a PC ( which may or may NOT be faster ), but also concentrating on techniques to increase show speed, and increasing songs song per night. Some use tempo speed controls to slightly speed up songs, or mic handling techniques designed to get one singer down and the next up "wasting as lttle time as possible.

I'm talking about good hosts with a love for their work....

There is another kind of host ( Me, for one). This host thinks that people need to RELAX when they're out having fun. I believe that speed is NOT of the essence ( though you do have to keep moving at a decent pace). I believe that the time between singers isn't "wasted", but allows the last singer to get a bit more recognition time, and the new one to get a good intro- both part of the singing star experience so important to karaoke. I believe that the host should take the time to interact with as many of their patrons has possible. Why? Well I like it and so do they, but there's more to it. Example: I start a new venue so I text a few of my patrons and voila! - a full house on the first night. Last Tuseday I had the feeling that it may be a slow start due to inclement weather. I called a couple of the most local singers and asked if they would help me start. Upshot: I had starters to get the ball rolling, and they felt special because I called them.

My patrons ( I don't say singers, because I'm there to make sure ALL are entertained) tell me that they feel like family.

Blowing my own horn: I have NEVER failed to be a success at ANY venue.

Is my way better than the techno-speed host? For me, and my patrons- Definitely.

For the Techno-speed host and his happy patrons? Probably not.

So is there any reason to try and change anyone's mind regarding Disc vs. PC or show styles? If both are successful, and the hosts and patrons are happy.........nope.
