I have a Karaoke gig and I want to show the lyrics on an external monitor for the singer and on a big screen for the audience.

How do I do this and what do I need?

Using Virtual DJ.

How are you sending video? HDMI or VGA?

You use a HDMI splitter preferably a powered one. If it’s VGA then a VGA splitter although I don’t think I’ve seen VGA in years. I started with a 4x1, One input & 4 outputs. Then move 4x2 to two inputs and 4 outputs as I hookup two laptops and three TVs. Hopefully you know how to extend your screen, that has to done on the laptop in settings.

ad2ent: Thanks for the info. I’ve been using just a single monitor. Now for a gig I have to hook up to a screen as well. Does the split draw any power from the laptop like a USB hub?

You'll want an active HDCP compliant HDMI splitter if you want avoid issues with copyright protected content. This means a switcher that properly manages the EDID for each display. In today's world many devices will nor send protected HDMI content to or through a device that is not HDCP compliant. This is especially true of Blue-ray players, but increasingly more of the new video capable devices including PCs.

You can easily mistake a distribution amp or switcher as defective when in reality is simply not properly resondng to confirm the connected devices are displays rather than recorders.

I was just going through my supply closet at work and found 4 VGA splitters that haven't been used in at least 5 years now. I doubt they will ever be used again along with a big bin of VGA and DVI cables. Time to do some recycling.
