The below picture is an excerpt from my book on DMX. DMX fixtures must be hooked up this way. It's very simple and easy to do. Most of you guys/gals who feel intimidated by DMX should give it a try.

Channels (channels of control) are the individual functions of each fixture. Every fixture has various functions and each one of them must be set by moving the "channel slider" on the controller. It's just like playing a video game...

Functions are any of the following: mirror pan and tilt (pan takes one channel and tilt takes another channel). Selecting a color requires one more channel and gobo needs one channel. NOTE: Some of the cheaper fixtures use color and gobo on the same channel (my gobo thread explains this). More channels are used for light intensity (dimmer), strobe or shutter. There are too many functions to list, but every function requires one channel slider to make it operate. With the 12 fixture controller, you can utilize up to 16 different channels (or functions). Most DMX fixtures have less then 8 channels.

Channels are valued digitally (on the controller) from zero to 255. This is what changes the setting on the fixture. An example might be: full mirror deflection to the left has a value of zero, while full deflection the the right is valued at 255. These deflections are on only one channel.

Another example might be the color white (another channel) is valued at zero and purple might be at 255. Every channel has the same digital values from zero to 255, and each channel changes the function of that particular feature of the fixture. These color changes are also only on one channel.

So, each channel that a fixture has, can be varied to your preference. Then, you go onto the next channel to place the fixture in the configuration you desire. Once all of your channels are set the way you like, you "record" that configuration as a "scene". You can then configure the lights into 7 more scenes which will occupy one "bank". Banks can hold 8 scenes each, and there are 30 banks (with the common 12 fixture controller). NOTE: Software computer programs don't restrict the number of fixtures or scenes.

I'm now open for questions...

Here's the picture I wanted...

This goes with the above message... sorry I missed it last time.
