I'm not against that in any way,shape or form Wolfie..

I'm referring to the threads of some that say they want thousands to work on NYE, then whine that they don't work.

Thunder has my point down exactly.!!!!

I don't have to worry about the last min calls because my bars are ahead of the game.

I do realize that some quote the crazy prices, because they really don't want to work on NYE.......But if someone is going to fill there pocket with cash...Then they will work. Nothing wrong with that at all!!!!

I keep hearing that i need to at least triple my rates for NYE....I don't see the point.
I talked to the bar owner from my NYE gig today....She has an envelope for me behind the bar, Because i worked for 3.5 hours more than i had too.

I did not demand anything from her, She did this on her own...
 
I can see both sides of this one but........ I will still add this below

I think its not a matter of whats being charged its how its presented to the set of clients currently - if you tell clients (Oh for NYE this is a set price for a NYE show and this is what you will be charged)

then how can that be any different to telling others I want more for NYE because its a one of time of the year

so now, what say you!

I say that i just avoid the whole subject by not charging more than normal rates.

I'm really not doing anything different than i do on any other show at there bar.
(Well, this year i brought 2 extra sub cabs...)

Just what justifies the huge price increase??? The bar i was at LOWERED there drink prices.........Why should i RAISE mine???

I see the point of higher prices because of supply and demand, IF you don't normally work at these establishments, or don't work in bars period.
 
I used to have this same situation when I was doing schools in CA... I has a number of schools that I did their dances all year, some were like 6 or 7 dances.

Come December time, I had a buddy who used to say he wouldn't do schools in December because he could make more doing a company party...

Well he was right, that ONE night a year he could. When he stated that idea he was also doing a number of schools and gave me a hard time for not doing what he did...

But the following year he lost about 50% of his schools because they had to go find another DJ for their Christmas dance...

So yeah, that one night in December he maybe made $400.00 more for a gig, but he lost a $3000 school account.....

I kept the schools happy and did their dances.....made more money from them in the long run. He was a multi op BTW and at one time, had 9 DJs working, after he lost the schools, he was and is down to 4....

It all falls under the old Supply vs. Demand argument.... for example:

When ND plays at home here in South Bend all hotel nightly rates double and triple and also minimum number of nights stay increases as well.... why? Because the demand is there when 50,000 plus fans come to town..... it's a limited time engagement with limited availability...

Same goes for special nights such as NYE.... rates on specialty rooms go up as well.

Entertainment for that night should go up as well because demand is much higher then.... even bars and clubs that normally don't have entertainment are looking for entertainers..... and most of them are charging entrance fees for their patrons....

So, why wouldn't a DJ charge more for that one night limited engagement than what they charge every other day..... I tell you why demand.

That being said in defense of those that have higher priceing for NYE. For many of us we can't charge that much. Or maybe we can I just don't know... the one and only inquiry I got this year for NYE was turned down due to price and I wasn't chargin' any higher than normal priceing at that time.....

If you have 10 people beating your door down for NYE (like having 100 hotel rooms for 150 people) then charge whatever you want, there is only one of you. However if on NYEE you don't have a gig and someone calls and offers $1000 (half your normal rate), then if you are a full timer you really are dumb not to take it.

I had the opposite (of sorts) occur when a bar owner called and said the "band had cancelled". (They were going to pay $1600 to the band)

My rate was $950 but this was still a LOT for them to pay as their gate was down 40% from the prior year's NYE.

The reason I got this gig was because the bar's Mgr. had used me for his own wedding & reception 2 years ago.

(Also, after learning more about the lower gate receipts, I came to the conclusion that Ty was going with the DJ as a cost-cutting move--- not because the band was "flaky.")
 
no matter what anyone got for Nye and by the way some of you talk you didn't work at all, i believe that a lot of people are not doing the big or small party's at all, i did a bridal show in Nov. and i asked the host how her holiday party's look and she said they had only 2 bookings, way way down from other years. I don't raise my price for special time like this ( Nye ) I'm from a very small community if raised my price here they would tell me to go **** in my hat
