Why the hell do they call them wakes. The deceased is certainly not awake. They should just call it a sleep in.

Seems that there was a flood in Ireland and many coffins were unearthed. When they were re-burying the coffins back in the grave, it was noticed that many of them had scratches on the inside of the coffin lid. This meant that the poor slobs were buried alive. Unintentionally for sure. They were probably very sick and simply couldn't answer anyone. Presumed dead, they were buried.

So they came up with the idea that the clan would gather when someone died. The body would be laid out in the parlor, and everyone was expected to pay their respects, but at the same time, attempt to 'Wake" the person, in case the person was merely in a deep sleep.

They would "wake" the person for three days. Then bury him.

The wakes became somewhat elaborate with food and drink and fiddlers playing tunes. It actually became somewhat festive.
