Actually Bob the thing is in very solid condition. Looked it over quite carefully and the engine is smooth and responsive. Transmission seems tight too.
Of course, now that I've said that, it'll probably break on the ride home!!

Dave, I wouldn't worry about it. I always took good care of the ones I drove.

What style did you get- van; van with box; or pickup with box? I have a 7.6 liter powerstroke diesel in my van and it is the best van I have ever owned (E-350 with 200K miles). I have plenty of power, the AC will freeze you out and the heater will cook you. it doesn't break often but when it does, it's expensive.
However with ambulances it's more than just the engine. I'm not trying to bum you out, but this is what I was told by the mechanics where I worked. The suspension is tired from hopping curbs and being overweight (see below); the brakes are tired from jackrabbit starts and stops; the electrical system is tired from the extra load with all the lights; the motor is tired from starting cold to balls-to-the-wall driving, idling with all the lights on, & shutting off without cooling down; the AC system is tired from being overworked; etc.
About being overweight- When I was shopping for my diesel van back in '97 the first thing every salesman asked was if it was going to be an ambulance. I asked why and was told that ambulances always exceed the factory maximum weight limits which voids the warranty.

Oooh, NICE!! You have a Type III. I have a Type I (I don't have the walk-thru).
Don't worry Dave! Its already a done deal. You use it as a business expense, get it all fixed up and enjoy it as long as it lasts.
