I just got a text from my Bride for today asking me to play "Zorba The Greek" because her family is Greek.... so any other ideas that you have for me?

Chuck, let me do some looking around. I know Ducky's posted some stuff before. I'll let her know you're looking for some ideas (she is of Greek descent).

There is a 3 CD box set called Zorba's Dance that will have more Greek music than you'll probably need. I saw Zorba's Dance listed, which is probably what you are looking for, but couldn't understand any other song titles- it's all Greek to me (I couldn't resist)

Chuck, check out this thread:

If that doesn't help, PM Ducky.

This is a good thread for info. It all comes down to what the bride and groom are looking for. Are they looking for a lot of Greek music? Do they want a few songs (like "Zorba the Greek") during dinner? Do they want a couple of Greek dances?

It's hard to find decent international music on Amazon, but there's more popular music on greekmusic.com .

If you need some more help, please post some specifics about what the B&G are looking for. :)

You can listen to a lot of those old recordings here: http://www.last.fm/music/Demetrios+Pogis+Orchestra/Greek+Dances+Recorded+in+USA

Personally, I wouldn't play this for today's Greek crowd (not even the yia-yias!) because there are more modern, high-quality recordings of older tunes.

I was once asked for a Top 10...I still can't really deliver, but here are some artists and albums that I would have if I were planning on playing some Greek music:

Amazon.com: Best of Glykeria: Glykeria: Music@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51GAmGvUdDL.@@AMEPARAM@@51GAmGvUdDL

http://www.greekshops.com/Greek_Tra..._of_Our_Land_2CD.html?pdi=731452688729&ug=113

These artists are unbeatable. I've grown up listening to them. If you want traditional Greek mainland songs, these 2 compilations are a huge chunk of them.

Some more modern laika artists I like and recommend:

Notis Sfakianakis - Amazon.com: Notis 10 Me Tono - Best Of The Best: Notis Sfakianakis: MP3 Downloads@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/411W4yU6iAL.@@AMEPARAM@@411W4yU6iAL

Despina Vandi - Amazon.com: Very Best of: Despina Vandi: Music@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51F%2BIULf6kL.@@AMEPARAM@@51F%2BIULf6kL

Amazon.com: Gia: Despina Vandi: Music@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41-4iQT5rvL.@@AMEPARAM@@41-4iQT5rvL

Katy Garbi - Amazon.com: The Digital Collection: Katy Garbi: MP3 Downloads@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51NfnT8GtDL.@@AMEPARAM@@51NfnT8GtDL

Amazon.com: Kenourgia Ego: Katy Garbi: MP3 Downloads@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41vlq8CKn9L.@@AMEPARAM@@41vlq8CKn9L

Antonis Remos - Amazon.com: antonis remos: MP3 Downloads@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41M8Z55Ls7L.@@AMEPARAM@@41M8Z55Ls7L

Another popular artist is Anna Vissi - Amazon.com: Travma: Anna Vissi: MP3 Downloads@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51iHZMvJANL.@@AMEPARAM@@51iHZMvJANL

Amazon.com: Kravgi: Anna Vissi: MP3 Downloads@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/513klV-7ICL.@@AMEPARAM@@513klV-7ICL

Amazon.com: Nylon: Anna Vissi: Music@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51VZhCfDvTL.@@AMEPARAM@@51VZhCfDvTL

There's also Lefteris Pantazis, but the stuff on Amazon (Amazon.com: The Digital Collection: Lefteris Pantazis: MP3 Downloads@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51T9wtEunbL.@@AMEPARAM@@51T9wtEunbL) doesn't do his work justice. He has some great albums out that are available on the Astoria site: greekmusic.com but I'm too cheap to pay the import prices!

There are lots of other good Greek musical artists...this is the tip of the iceberg. As for that Locomondo group, I'm not sure how popular they are amongst Greek-Americans. Ska is a very acquired taste, so to speak.

If you're looking for artists that are new and popular now, check out the artists listed on this non-stop mix: http://www.greekmusic.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=CDR-2010&eq=&Tp=
These mixes come out every year. I wouldn't recommend buying them to play because they are non-stop mixes with only snippets of songs, but when I played a lot of Greek music, I used them to find what's popular.

I hope this helps! :)

This sounds like you thought I played the wrong music because it was not what you would play. I took the time to see what my client wanted me to play. They wanted some traditional older music mixed in throughout the cocktail hour and dinner as they had a lot of older greek family who would appreciate it. They wanted a few uptemo circle dance type songs and they wanted hip hop and Locomondo played late in the evening. I guess with any question of this sort my advice would be ASK YOUR CLIENTS WHAT THEY WANT.

I apologize if I offended you. I never said that you played the wrong music. I only said that I would play more modern renditions of the classic rembetiko and zeibekika. That one compilation had a lot of record pops that could be distracting during dinner. Perhaps I simply had bad flashbacks to listening to some of my dad's old 78s and 45s. :)
