There's no voodoo to SEO use your keywords on your site and update once in a while you should be in the top 10 pretty consistently. I also believe it has something to do with where you search from for example Wes found Rick on page 1 spot 7 I found him on spot 3 page 2. The good news is there is only one actual DJ site ahead of you the bad news is all the wedding wire paid ads are ahead of you

Wonder how hard it would be to torpedo weddingwire on google?

Might be easier and cheaper to have a gold listing. I suspect they have a team of people to get them there and it wouldn't surprise me if they pay a little to be there also. They aren't number one in all markets though I believe they use selective SEO

You need to read your audience.

For example, I would not search for Nashville Wedding DJ. I would simply search for DJs around the Nashville area.

People search in different ways. For example I just Goggled "find djs in the Nashville area".

You didn't show in the first 7 pages -- then I gave up. I've found that most people won't even go farther than the first page of search results.

Something to think about...

That's the thing there are so many variables you can't cover all the bases and humans are creatures of habit you have to go with the common search terms. Another thing I found helpful was to have a footer on my website that lists the communities we serve....All the small areas around the center of the market and put those areas in your keywords also

Well now that's strange. I did your query while logged. I came up on page #1, position #3. Logged out and I showed up on page #2, middle of the page. Also wondering if I need to add "DJs" and "area" to my keywords. Interesting stuff, gang.

1. I never log in to Google.
2. I clear all Google cookies on a weekly basis.

They track everything you do, so you need to keep it clean, if you want to get reasonable results.

SoftJock Rick, I think young people (i.e. potential wedding clients) are much more tech savvy than older folks like yourself. They know how to enter keywords (i.e. Filter) into a search engine to get more accurate results. Who wants to know about all the radio and club djs in Nashville when looking for a wedding dj?

+1 Long tail queries is where it's at from an SEO prospective for us little guys.

While you're at it can everyone do the same for me? Memphis Wedding DJ or Memphis Wedding DJs. Thanks. How about including Bing and Yahoo too. Thanks!

#7 on the Google
#1 on Bing
#19 on Yahoo

I wouldn't refer to them as tech savvy -- they simply know how to push a button on their silly cell phone. Keywords don't work as well anymore -- posing a question seems to work much better these days.

Google analytics

ok who can recommend some resources for improving SEO

Analytics are great for seeing who is visiting and some info on the demographic but as far as seo goes it gives you just a basic insight they arent going to tell you how to get to the top.

SEO changes alot but stick to the basics of keywords and backlinks especially backlinks from high traffic sites like Youtube Craigslist Kijjiji etc but the more the merrier. Use backlinks from social media also. People become obsessed with their website becoming number one but in all reality there is bigger fish to fry it doesn't matter how they find you or get to your site as long as they do

As of this moment using my most often used keywords I am number 2 on google but I'm mentioned in 6 of the top 10 (kijjiji, YP.ca, hitched.ca, and 2 others) Top of mind awareness is an old concept but if you are searching for a DJ and you keep seeing the same name everywhere iit's got to bode well for you

There are a few good threads here also
