My best friends are getting married in September and I get to give a best man speech. I've got a pretty good speech written but just wondering if any of you have seen anything really funny or creative to help give me more inspiration. Anytime I run a line by my wife and she responds "You can't say that", I put that line into the speech. I have, unfortunately, seen very few rememberable speeches. I am thinking of incorporating a projector with some pictures to highlight key items in the speech.

So what are some of your favorite best man speeches?

"I demand everyone's undivided attention before dinner here as I have prepared a 45 page long Speech!" :D

...Please don't produce a long, underwhelming speech. I can't personally stand when the speech maker is taking more than 4 minutes to make their speech. When there are 3 to 4 or more speeches and each one is more than 4 minutes long, it's tiresome for everybody.

To keep that in perspective (^^^^), it really is supposed to be a "Best Man's Toast," but over the years we have made it "Best Man's 'Speech'."

Short, sweet, and funny, with appropriate well-wishes to bride and groom, are what's called for.

I defenitely noticed the changes with this. It started happening in 2008. Prior to 2008 I don't think I ever deejayed a wedding where the speech was more than 90 seconds long from either the Best Man, Father of the Bride, or the Maid of Honor. 90 seconds was about as long as they lasted, and they did a quick toast. In 2008/2009/2010 I started to notice some best man speeches and maid of honor speeches go longer. By 2011 I noticed the majority of speeches were moving into the 3 to 7 minute per speech range. A stark contrast from years prior. As time as marched on it seems Father of Bride speeches have become MUCH LONGER. Best Man and Maid of Honor Speeches are RARELY ever less than 2.5 minutes long, and at least 50% of the time are more than my 4 minute per speech maximum that I'd like to see. I have seen 15 to 20 minute long speeches at weddings, and I think speeches that long need to be prohibited 100% LOL. I did a Asian wedding where the speeches took 43 minutes total...Dinner was held up for 43 minutes while 5 different speeches were given. On the timeline made with the caterer, the bride/groom put down that speeches would only take 10 minutes. ...They were DYING to get dinner served.

In Short...I hate long speeches at weddings. 3 speeches at 2 to 3.5 minutes long should be sufficient, but for some reason a lot of people feel they need to elaborate with stories, and suck the life out of all the guests at the wedding!

I don't believe you're writing down a speech for this. You should easily be able to come up with something off the top of your head if this your best friend. Keep it simple and to the point. A couple of jokes that hopefully people will find funny and that's it.

Yea .. after a few drinks and standing nervously in front of lots of people .. that's the best time to wing it ...

Yea, those are generally the toasts that completely bomb.

I had a father a couple weeks ago that went on for 45 minutes. He stopped about every 7 minutes and said "I think I've earned the right to be up here" Luckily, it was after dinner.

For this one its just me and the matron of honor (my wife) and she will only speak for about 1 or 2 minutes. Mine is around 5 minutes. I think toasts are just like DJ's that MC. If you don't have a lot of confidence in public speaking and are not prepared. It sounds awful and you should limit your time on the mic. If you are a good public speaker and a quick thinker, you can spend a little more time on the mic.

I build my toasts in bundles, if its bombing, I can quick shorten it. If its killing, I can keep going.

I've been the best man 5 times in my group of friends. And 2 brothers
I'm pretty sure most of them picked me because of the quality of the bachelor parties.

My one friend, who I was not the best man for, said his finance didn't want any scantly clad woman at his bachelor party. We told him we are having a bachelor party for you. You are welcome to come or not. He showed up.

Scantly clad means little clothing, right? So if they were full nude, your good.

It seems every DJ has the same suggestion. Keep it short.
Personally, I would start by mentioning that you have prepared a short toast...

and then roll out a whole pile of that dot-matrix (connected) computer paper....
or plop a whole ream of paper on the table.

But my favorite is an "old Irish toast"....

"May your troubles be as few and as far between.....as my grandfather's teeth"
