If you don't use CD's or records and the software will do it for you then what is the argument about? I haven't carried a CD in at least 10 years or a Record in probably 20. Can I do it? Yes I can I could beatmatch and mix with Records and CD's and if I dig the tables out I'm sure I could develop the timing to do it again it's not exactly rocket science but it is a learned skill. Look and Listen you can pick it up easy. I could do it manually with the software too I have done it but normally I won't do more than adjust the cue points occasionally. Why? Because the software does it for me and does it well. The wheel has been invented I have no need to complicate that

If one is playing one whole song after another from beginning to end, of course the Software can do that for you. When I do special parties and club parties I usually don't play a song from beginning to end. I may bring in a Drop or Loop while a song is playing, do a sudden slip cue into another song and back etc. How about running three decks simultaneously with a running loop or drop on the fourth deck. I am talking about "Live" mixing with more than one song, making a medley on the fly. This is the kind of mixing to which I am referring. Not everyone is capable of doing that kind of thing. You can go from a 116BPM to a 126BPM where you have to ride the speed/pitch or do a fast cut. How is a software going to know to do things on the fly based on the crowd's energy?

That is why they made platters on Controllers! My MEP Does it and other Units do too! Those were made to emulate TT Platters.

Scratching is an effect perfected by a skill. Don't go making excuses for your shortcomings. Maybe where you are people don't care. Go to a Big City and DJ an event by just pushing play and lets see how far that would get you. Lastly, a Venue does not have to require anything. Don't try to teach me definitions of what real Mixing is all about. You are out of your element on this one buddy!

lol well said, although beatmatching is just the basic skill ,one first needs to aqquire to succesfully be able to mix ,then you have to think about , vocal's ,melody ,harmony ,pitch , tune aggression, type ,etc etc etc to successfully mix takes a huge amount of skill
In no way could i "press play" lord... what a dull set that would be !! i love the variation and technique involved in bringing song's together, even one's deemed to be an impossibility ,one of the things that go down so well at my event's and gig's are when i do live mashups from request's off the floor ,and watch them go nuts to it :) ~PEACE~ ~DeJ~ :)

Canute where I live if I didn't play the song pretty much end for end I'd be thrown out on my ear. One of the first questions I get asked often is are you a club DJ or a wedding DJ because we want a wedding DJ. They don't want someone scratching or making loops they are very clear on that alot of times. I don't do clubs and haven't in many years. It's not because I can't it's because in this area there's no money in it and if it don't make dollars it don't make sense ;)

I understand Jeff. I don't do much weddings any more but even then, I still mix manually but in a different way than just push play. When I do the Country Clubs which are my Mainstays, I also get very creative there because those people like to party. I am not trying to convince you to do otherwise or fault you. However, I know of many others who say "it is not needed" only because they can't do it!

Wow, you seem to have turned over a new leaf. I'm impressed. I do the same Canute. I do these other things as wanted / desired. I also know people that can't do it, but they don't by choice.

That statement is contradictory. If a person can't do it its because they don't know how to do it. You don't have to be so PC. Let others make their own excuses.;)

No, you misinterpreted. ;)

I'm not making excuses for anyone. My point was that I know people that don't do these additional things by choice (some know how / some don't know how). They feel that there is no compelling reason for them to learn and / or to do it. It's their opinion / choice / decision .. and it's working very well for them.

Whatever! It is either they can or can't. If they can't or don't know how, they are limiting themselves as a DJ, irregardless of what Gigs they choose to do. All DJs should be able to learn and do the Basic Skills whether or not they do it at an event is irrelevant.

;)

I agree that if you don't do / use these additional skills, you may be limiting yourself to an area - but for the people that don't - they are certainly not having any problems being successful. Similar to the discussion of 'Stupid Requests', there is a time, place and environment for this stuff too (beatmatching, blending, scratching, beat juggling, etc, etc).

Example: If someone asks for Paradise By The Dashboard Light, they're usually not looking for the remixed beatmatched scratched version - they want the original. Are there places you can play the other version(s)? Sure - but it will generally not be the places asking for the song. Am I saying to use the original for everything, absolutely NOT. Like everything else, you have to judge what your floor / event wants.

Jeff's comment of 'Canute where I live if I didn't play the song pretty much end for end I'd be thrown out on my ear' applies to more areas than just Sydney, Nova Scotia.

I think I'll pick up a Pioneer MEP-7000 so I can automix with the best.

There are better Controllers out there than the Pioneer MEP 7000. I bought this one because it was a rack mount and was new at the time Pre 2010.
