Funny you keep disparaging them Thunder, I keep getting lots of complements. Of course I use them with a subwoofer or sometimes two depending on the size of the venue. They sound great for vocals and make good monitors for Karaoke too. If I was as unhappy as you are with a speaker I would get rid of them. I'll give you $100 each and I'll pay the shipping too.
I don't see any other 18 pound speakers that compare, but I'm open to suggestions. If you know of another speaker in that size/weight/price range that delivers more I'd be very interested to hear about it. I'm always looking for the latest and greatest small and light weight speakers.
Before you mention the Peavey Impulse remember they don't weigh 18 pounds, they cost more, they are bulkier, use a 10" LF driver and you need a lot more power to drive them. The Zx1s are much more efficient and don't require scads of power. They're actually too loud and too powerful for some small rooms/groups that I do.
The powered Sb2a sub is overpriced IMO, but I'm a passive guy and IMO most powered speakers are overpriced.

The room I played tonight again proved brilliant.The staff asked asked`about my lighting and the tiny system with big boom! I explainedhat though Dynadord isnt ahousehold name it holds the best deciding all this!!

Wrong answer! They may be useless for you. For me? I love them! I've used them for everything from weddings to school dances and even some outdoor events. Absolutely zero feedback.

I am not disparaging them by any means they are simply NOT a DJ speaker! They are a great bookshelf speaker and would do a wonderful job for background music in a very quiet venue or for a ceremony system, I simply choose to use the Fender passports for that purpose!
Actually, the ZX1 is not that efficent and you are correct it can not take a lot of power. They are a great sounding speaker though at a limited SPL!
You are also correct as to the weight and price range though so far I have not heard any other speaker in that size range that compares to it. (I am still looking)
I own a pair of ZX1's, so I know of what I speak!
I can only imagine what venues you guys play, because my very short stint of using the ZX1 as a DJ speaker proved that it just wasn't enough for the types of gigs that I wanted it for! I always use subs with any speakers regardless of the size of the mains. The only time I don't use subs is with the ceremony system.
I now use the ZX1's for playback in the studio with a 12" sub. I was using Impulse 200Ps for that purpose but they were just too much for the small room.
To be honest the Peavey Impulse 6 weighs less, has the same efficency and takes almost as much power. (I wouldn't use those for DJing either) I also don't think they sound as good as the ZX1!
I am honestly glad that you guys like them for what you use them for, but it seems to me Jamie Simpson is selling his "two month old" ZX1's for a reason! Apparently he is either getting out of the business or found them lacking for what he does as well! You simply don't sell a two month old speaker system at a loss without a damn good reason!
I think they are great sounding boxes and are perfectly matched power wise.
I have 3 venues I do a good bit of work at that I THOUGHT they could be my workhorse at those venues and they did a great job, just not enough headroom.
I also had a chance to do a shoot out with the Dynacord 1002 system (1 powered sub, passive sub, and 2 8 inch boxes). The same system that hirepower has.
Sound quality and tone they are equals. The Dynacord has more headroom (25%-35% more)
So that is where I'm going to next.

That is exactly what i found with the ZX1 as well great sound but not enough SPL to get over floor noise in the smaller venues I do (ie. bars)! Trying to add enough power to get over the floor noise had the ZX1's quickly slapping the former against the back plate!
But they do make an awesome set of "mains" for the studio! I use the older KRK 8's as studio monitors (which are great but you can't really get the "venue sound" from them, they are just too bright) The ZX1's with a small 12" sub, give me a great venue sound in my small studio!
I understand now. I would never try to use the ZX1 by itself. I run them with the SB2A subs. Of course, now I'm jazzed about this system with my 18s.
If I was doing much larger venues I would consider adding a second pair of Zx1s and a second pair of Sb122 subs if necessary with a single QSC GX5 amp at a price tag of roughly $1,600-$1,700. With that second pair you could handle at least 300-350 people if not more depending on placement of the speakers. I'm not trying to make peoples' ears bleed by playing at super high volume levels.
As far as not being a good DJ speaker, the only complaints I get are "can you turn the volume down?". I'm not playing at 10,000 sq ft rooms, it's more like 2000 sq ft up to maybe 6000 sq ft, VFW, ELKS mostly and not high ceilings. In these smaller venues the Zx1/Sb122 combo has more than enough SPLs. If someone really needs more I would just go to a larger speaker. Since I got my Zx1s/Sb122s I rarely use my 12" EV Sx100+ speakers anymore.
I really wish EV would come out with a Zx or Sx series speaker with a 10" LF driver and a wide dispersion horn, it would be my nearly perfect all around speaker.

As I said, I never run any speaker system without at least 1 sub all of mine are 15" or 18" subs the only 12" subs I use anymore is the one I use in the studio!
I believe Jamie was also using a sub with them as well (the SB2A he is selling with the ZX1s)!

All I can say is I'm REALLY surprised by your assessment of this speaker. I have a local performer that I know who has heard my system several times when I have performed my singing show. He absolutely loves my sound and talks about it whenever we meet. I had a customer recently remark that I had "the best sounding system he had ever heard in 15 years singing Karaoke" - I don't even have an EQ or a crossover in my rack and I am underpowering my speakers. So something isn't adding up here.
I own lots of speakers, Peavey 115, Community 15" and 12", EV Sx100, and the Zx1s. I've been to many bars and clubs and heard lots of other equipment, Behringer, Yamaha, BOSE, JBL etc. and I'm NOT selling my Zx1s. If I wanted to make peoples' ears bleed I'd get a pair of EV Elininators and Eliminator subs or a pair of Tour X and a pair of matching subs and a couple of powerful amplifiers. But that's not the kind of thing I do right now. That may be why my hearing is so good . . .

this just goes back to the situation where not every speaker is for every DJ. And what works for some may not work for others.

People can not make a blanket statement about anything. It is always their personal opinion.
