EV Electro Voice ZLX-12P Powered Speakers making LOUD Static Noise

3 days ago, while setting up lighting, it must have some type of power surge with EV Electro Voice ZLX-12P, that caused the this speaker to make a thundering Electrical burst where sparks occurred.
Now when powered on, it just makes a loud static/thundering noise.

I am going to take it to Guitar Center or Sam Ash to see if repairable, replacement parts inside, before deciding to replace the Speaker.
Have any of you had this type of situation with Powered Speakers.

Could you recommend a powered Speaker Replacement for the EV ZLX-12P?

What I don't understand is how did this happen? I never heard of such a thing. Did you have any music playing while setting up?
 
I'd agree with ittigger, why not stay with EV. That sounds like very freak sort of incident. I only ever plug my equipment into surge protectors... which may or may not have helped in this situation. I've been using my EV EKX 12's for over a year and absolutely love them. I just bought a pair of ZLX 15's and am very happy with them as well. If the local shops can't figure it out, I'd reach out to EV directly. If it was some sort of rare type of incident, they may be able to work with you somewhat on a replacement. Never hurts to ask.

I am opened to replace with any Powered Speaker; EV or any other Brand. I will check into the suggestions above. I am happy that found ODJT's website. You all have been, and are very helpful since I have been here. A Thank you to each of You!

Stick with EV. I'm surprised at how much these speakers have gone down in price. Two suggestions to consider:

1) Make sure you don't have the input set to "mic level". It should be "line level". I know this sounds elementary but one of my DJs did this in the past and burned up a practically new set of speakers.
2) Use an over-easy compressor between your mixer and the speaker. I use a dbx 266 and it makes a huge difference in the punch and headroom I get off my system.

Maybe that was the issue. I have never set up lights and a speaker got damaged.
 
Let me suggest a very good tool to have and use. Furman power conditioner. That helps to protect your gear from any power surges or other things that can damage your gear. It will shutoff immediately if there's an issue. Regular power stripes are not recommended. We had an issue and I wasn't there. My partner was doing an event and a kid tripped I guess. The power strip came out the wall damaging some of the gear. Just be careful everybody.

Which Furman model number do you recommend Adrian?

Just a suggestion, don't just get a power conditioner. A unit that has voltage regulation will raise the voltage when it's sagging at the venue. I've used this one for over 8 years and it's always been a champ.

Furman -M. I have 2 and my latest laptop has a odd shaped power cord. So it works best with that power cord. Another power strip the cord doesn't stay all the way in.

Any update on what was wrong. My EK15p is doing the same thing. Acts like AC/DC power is going out the speaker cables to the mixer. Big spark jumped from the speaker cable to the mixer when I tried to plug it in. Speaker was powered off by the way. Then had everything turned off, plugged everything in, then turned on the speaker and the mixer and same roaring sound. I'm going to call warranty repair next.

I suggest you buy a Furman surge protector. They may cost a bit more but well worth it. Better than a regular cheap power strip. Especially with the type of equipment that a DJ uses.

... It turned out that the Venue had been making multiple electrical repairs, where their Staff, along with myself had been receiving electrical Shocks whenever we would touch some of their electrical items. I was told that re-wiring had to installed.
As far as the Speaker, I took the advice of Ittigger, Forbes, Rick, and the others and/to purchase(d) another EV Speaker.
... The Venue reimbursed me for the cost of the Speaker.

That's great they reimbursed the cost of the speaker. I'll be getting one of those testers to see if that outlet was bad. It's an older building, so it might be bad. I tried that night to plug the speaker into a different outlet, but same result. The first outlet probably messed it up.
