Just because someone wears a suit doesn't mean they have a broomstick shoved up their bum.

But I love how DJ's continue to complain about rates and then fight for lower and lower standards... and then insist the two aren't related.

If it works for you, keep doing what you're doing...

In the meantime, I'll continue to wear a suit. I had a lunch meeting the other day with some vendors. One of them commented on how I always looked 'so professional'. It works for me...

Then have a nice day - you have a long way to go then!

Yes, I agree with AlbanyAMS. I don't get the debate either. You do it your way...I'll do mine. I didn't take ANY of the posts in this thread as forcing someone to do it their way. YOUR perception IS YOUR reality.

I'm not a wannabee corporate-raider, and my clients don't want/need me to be, so suits at a consult are out of the question for me!

Am I a business man? Yes. But at the same time, my clients understand that there WILL be a difference between what is worn at a consult and what will be worn at their formal event, and I always bring up attire at the consult and include verbiage for it in the contract they get, so it is understood that while I'm not in my "Sunday Best" for the consult, I will be attired as desired/required for their event - which is all they care about.

I'm not saying be slovenly or unkempt... keep it nice and clean and presentable, but be up-front about who you are, and be up front about how you will present yourself when it counts - at their event.

That you're "a professional" and a "businessman" isn't conveyed to them by your attire at consults as much as it is by your demeanor, your confidence, your attention-to-detail, your knowledge and conveyed experience at what you do, etc.

Unless you're swinging to the complete opposite end of the spectrum, they don't care what you look like at Starbucks, as long as you present yourself right from the time of that first phone call or email. Seal the deal by bringing up their desired/required attire at the meeting, discussing it, and including it in your written contract, and they will be fine!

Attire is perhaps the most insignificant aspect of a consult that we should be concerning ourselves with.

A little story about "business" attire.

The brief time I lived in Maryland, I worked at a Best Western. This was one of the oldest Best Westerns in the country (it still had 8 of the original rooms where you had to turn the electricity in the room on at the front desk)

The hotel was owned by a man who was in his mid 50s and had bought it when he was in his late 20s.

One day when I was talking to him, the subject of dress came up. I had noticed that he never ever seemed to be dressed up at all. We got to talking and it turns out this guy sits on the Governors Board for Best Western, is one of the highest ranking officials on the company, and is worth millions. He told me something I will never forget:

"I have never once in my entire life worn a suit or even a tie. I have never once worn any shoes other than tennis shoes and very rarely will you see me in anything other than jeans. If people are only going to do business with me because of how I dress, then I don't want their money anyway"

@ Patrick. Very cool story, and reminds me of some of the stuff I read in the book, "The Millionaire Next Door."

@ Justin. Couldn't have said it better.

I find this almost funny....

You say, you could care less what others wear, but you keep talking about anyone that doesn't follow your mentality of attire as having a broomstick shoved up their bum.

If you REALLY could care less, then why 'put down' those who don't follow your way of thinking?

I have reasons for dressing the way I do. And for those seeking to attire themselves in a similar manner I gave some advice on how to be more 'comfortable'. But as I said earlier I really could care less what you do. You do what you do, I'll do what I do. But I do take offense to the broomstick comment though.

But given your comments is appears the hypocrisy has no bounds...

because what they wear is what they wear - I couldnt care less

if you want to wear a suit thats your problem not mine

then who cares because I dont.............

yawn - I think someone has a problem with what others wear....

When I go to meet prospect I'm in shirt (w/collar) with my logo, jeans, white tennis shoes, and hat w/logo...for most meetings. Works for me.

When I go to an upscale meeting location (country club, for example), I'll change the jeans to "dockers" or "cotton pants" and not wear the hat...but still have the shirt w/Logo. Sometimes I'll wear a sport coat to "dress it up" a bit...and shoes vs tennis shoes.

Yea, and that person is YOU. I never commented on what others wore in a derogatory manner - but YOU did. Which certainly gives the impression that you DO care - no matter how much you say you don't.

I believe I said, 'But as I said earlier I really could care less what you do. You do what you do, I'll do what I do.'

then have a nice day because I am having a great one :)
