Do You Turn Down Gigs Because Of Inadequate Equipment?

I have never turned down a job because of equipment. If I need more I have a sound company that I can use or rent from some friends additional equipment. I have however turned down some events either because I did not think I will enjoy the event or the client did not seem like someone I wanted to work for.

For those who specialize in Weddings and have that kind of equipment designed for Weddings such as the Bose L1s or smaller powered speakers.

1. What do you do when you get a demand for a larger Gig that said equipment cannot handle? Rent.
2. Do you see it as making good sense to have only one kind of system designed for Weddings? As I basically only do weddings, yes.
3. Would it make more sense to have a system that can be toned down for a Wedding yet is fully capable of handling much larger crowds? My system is more than capable for my current needs.
4. Do you turn down the additional business? While I do like to challenge myself and try new things, I will turn down something that is beyond my skills. However, for equipment needs, if I can rent it I'll book it.

Answers above in blue.

We turn down jobs that are too small--really haven't run across the too large side. We have no desire to tie up our schedule iwth a smaller system in the foreseeable future.

Here's a related story... I was asked to quote on a wedding in a massive hall that seats over 500 while still maintaining a massive dance floor for weddings; they also hold small concerts there. It is basically a HUGE gym. Anyhow, I explained that I would have to charge them 1400 instead of my usual 1000 since they were in such a big room. I said that I would be happy to do it for a thousand at any of the normal venues. I turned it down because I refused to DJ it with my regular set-up and they refused to pay the extra.

Funny thing is that they had been to at least one wedding where I was a DJ and they were adamant about having me as their DJ. In fact, I had done weddings for quite a few people they knew and they all recommended me. Some people are just plain cheap. But then again, they probably paid more for their wedding cake. I wonder it it takes requests or will line them up for their grand entrance? Nah.......

I think you did the right thing. Why chance it with inadequate equipment?

RENT if you don't own...

I own over 3600 watts of sound, most being Mackie SRM-450s & Mackie SWA 1501s. I have done events with thousands of people with no problem. IF I needed additional equipment for an event, I would work that rental fee or percentage of the purchase into the client's price. I try not to turn down anything (especially big events) because of lack of equipment.

I dont have inadequate equipment... Lolllzzz

I refer someone on this board when its a gig over about 400 he can handle larger crowds and venues better than I

Massive seats over 500? For me it doesn't hit massive until the hall seats over 5000. *lol*
