Talking about what you would consider your first "serious" event. I'm not counting my teen stuff.
My first event was with "The Pros" ( I shudder to think about them :sqerr: ).... I was paid $40 a night and was allowed to keep "HALF" of any OT I made....
Anyway, I had been in their UNPAID training sessions for a few weeks. I got a call one day. A DJ they had scheduled to go out was hurt in a water skiing accident, and could I handle the job? I said yes.
Well, I had to go pick up gear from their office. And then I found my way to this trucker's union hall. The event was a wedding and I knew NOTHING about this couple. I was scared poopyless. Anyway, the union hall was actually open to any union member - people were coming to the bar and drinking diring this couple's event!
I got through the intro's "ok", I guess. I had a hard time getting folks to dance. About 1/2way through I had a request from some lady to play some Skynyrd. I figured, WTH?, might as well.... nothing else was really working.
Well. the party kicked into gear after that! Most of the rest of the night was spent playing country ( which I new very little about ) and Southern Rock... which I LOVE... Anyway this same lady was making requests all night, and she actually asked that I close with Freebird! WTH, why not?
The people LOVED it!
Anyway, as I was breaking down, that lady walked over to me and asked me if I wanted to have a "go" with her. and !!! I didn't know what to say. I "think" I was going to decline, when she then said "and don't worry about my husband... he's over at the bar -- she proceeds to point him out -- and he never comes home til the bar closes!
Ooops! Sorry, Gotta run!
Anyway, that was my first party. I was excited, thinking I was going to "score" a lot as a DJ.... guess what? I only was hit on one other time over the next 5 years..... and that woman was a LOT more "friendly" to me.... and nope, I didn't have a "go" with her either!
