DJ Workshops, Books, DVDs???

I could go out to the wiki, and spend a few hours to write some stupid book, and make a few hundred thou. Or I can work for a living, and produce something worthwhile...

What would you do...?

If writing a book could make someone a few hundred thousand dollars and all it would take was a few hours, I'd say go do that. Even if you want to keep "working for a living", you could donate all of that money to charity. I'd say that would be very worth while.

Can you imagine how many warm nights you could provide for homeless people with a few hundred thousand dollars? I'd say that would be well worth a few hours of work....and you'd still have plenty of time to produce something worthwhile.

That's what I would do.

I changed my mind. If you can spend a few hours and write a book and make a few hundred thousand, why not make a book and cd showing others how THEY can make a few hundred thou with a few hours of work. Then you and them can donate lots of money to good causes.

That sounds worthwhile to me.

Let me know how that works:sqwink:

The books, DVDs, and workshops are not the real problem. The real problem is the DJs that buy these things and treat the presentation as the be all, end all, and only right way to do it.

I am confident that Randy, Mark, Larry, Satcey, and whomever else has produced one of these wants you to take that knowledge an improve upon it.

Don't have time -- I'm busy making tutorials for my software, that I give away for free... :)

There is so much knowledge here that one would never need to go anywhere else. Heck one can just read this thread and feel the wealth of knowledge being disseminated. Books are for stupid people. DVDs are for suckers.

Jamie,

Only if the books are stupid and the DVDs are designed to take money away from the ignorant to begin with!

You are absolutely right. There are so many omniscient people here there is no reason for anyone to ever read a book, buy a DVD or attend a conference. Just come here and soak up the knowledge.

No Jamie, I wouldn't say that at all, there are certainly some who could gain a lot by reading a book buying a DVD or attending a conference. If they didn't learn anything else they would learn how to not be seperated from their hard earned money so easily.

I have a wonderful new way to produce music and for $29.95 I will sell you the DVD on how to do this are you interested?

If it's any help, I view the books, DVDs etc in the same league as textbooks or reference books.

Remember those? We had 'em in school and college. They were expensive and rather a hassle to carry around. We may have wondered why they existed since all we needed to know was covered in class anyhow.

Those textbooks sure came in handy when we had homework though. If we had the presence of mind to actually open the things, that was. :)

Let's say you attend a seminar and come out with a load of ideas. Good deal. You should also have come out with some notes and a textbook.

A year later, how much of the info you picked up at the seminar is still in your head? Chances are, not a whole hellufa lot. So you refer to your old textbooks and notes to refresh and prepare.

In five years you will be the same person as you are today (making the same money) except for the people you meet and the books that you read. The only people that are hurt by books are those who don't read them.

I'll just throw my two cents into the ring. I bought one of those game master dvds once...I watched it, was appalled by it and sent it back with a letter stating I don't care if I don't get my money back...I'll be damned to have a dvd like that in my house.

But did you learn anything from the experience? :sqwink:

I remember that one, Mac. I'd seen better production done at a high school level for a county fair, and the game suggestions were far from anything that I would have thought a professional would encourage.

Jamie,

For me the phrase "A fool and his money are soon parted" comes to mind!

But Mac's case was different he saw what it was and learned from it, I bet you can't fool him twice!

It is a shame though because there just might be something put out by someone that is or would have been a real gem, but because of all the garbage that is being pushed down the throats of DJ's in the name of "improvement" no one will probably ever read it, watch it or listen to it!

Are you going to order my DVD?

What's really funny though, I've purchased a few books that deal with the history and culture of the DJ and I've learned a ton from those books.

I just might write a book in 3 years, just to make a few bucks on the side. By then, I'll have more DJ work under my belt and I might have an M.B.A. which means that I'll be more than credible in the DJ world. Couple that with annual visits to Las Vegas (using money made from selling books) and I'll be golden! :)

Sorry. Sometimes, I just can't help myself.
