Just got a call from a great friend of mine. She used to be the event coordinator at a venue I play at a lot. She recommended me all the time. She now moved to a different venue in the same town and I just stopped in to talk to her yesterday and give her some cards.

She calls and asked if I was available on Saturday. A couple who is having ceremony and reception at her venue just got a email last night from their DJ saying that he won't be there for the ceremony but will be for the reception.

I already have a wedding so I couldn't help her out. Funny thing is she told me the guy they hired she never recommends to couples. He has a history of doing things like this. Must have been the price.

Didn't they get it in writing? (in the contract)
If not, why?

Otherwise, it's another "he said-she said" situation.

I always tell everyone to get EVERYTHING in writing, the times, location, name of the DJ, Etc.

I have no idea. I just took the call to see if I could help out. I didn't get into it with the Manager. And I doubt she would have known. She has only been on the job for a month at this job.

If he bailed on the ceremony, then he should have no rights to the reception. Winner takes all is what I would demand.

it does seem odd that a DJ that is contracted for the ceremony and reception would "bail" on the ceremony. Would make for an awkward reception i'd think

I'm guessing the client "assumed" the DJ was going to do it.

I've had many wedding gigs where at the time of signing weren't sure if they needed me for the ceremony as well. I tell them once they decided, let's get it in writing.
Otherwise...."they assumed" (additional costs involved)

I've had clients that contracted with the venue to provide the ceremony audio & music (package deal)
Some facilities are now throwing in these to secure the deal (not good for the DJs)

I don't blame the DJ without hearing his side of it. Maybe they thought the venue was providing it & found out differently & then counted on the DJ at the last minute to cover it?

I'm sure there's more involved to this.
