Who owns 'em?

What brand(s) do you own?

Pros and cons of the brand that you own?

Thanks

Global Truss ST-90 Light Duty Crank Stand and cross bar

Solidly built
Center tube is silver bare metal - I had a seamstress sew a black fabric sleeve

Heres the K&M stand

hope the picture gives you an idea of the durability.

I have 2 K&M crank stands and 2 Odyssey crank stands... while the K&M stands are absolutely the most rock-solid stands that I've ever used, I take the Odyssey ones out more often because they're lighter.

If anyone's interested in the K&Ms (with carry bag, t-bars and 3-ft extension pieces), let me know. I used them only once.

What is it you expect them to do?

What you pick should be based on what you need to accomplish.

What weight capacity?
What transport weight & size?
What height?
Flat surfaces or articulated?

Several things actually. I'm looking at the ability to raise various lights, possibly have the ability to raise my EV Eliminators higher without killing myself.

Very true, that's why I'm trying to gather some information to educate myself a bit more on what's out there.

What weight capacity?

I would imagine that 100 lbs would be the max.

What transport weight & size?

Truthfully I'm not too worried about the weight and size (as long as I don't have to use a forklift and buy a semi), my big concern is purchasing something that will last and that will not break the bank.

What height?

Truthfully, I'm not sure.

Flat surfaces or articulated?

Definitely flat surfaces only (at this time.)

Very good questions Bob! :notworthy:

I LOVE my K&M crank stands -- yes, they are heavy; but they are sturdy! I just wish they would crank up taller/higher. They work fine for lighting in a low ceiling venue or when I am on a stage -- otherwise they are a bit short for lighting, IMO.

100# capacity would be a waste of a crank stand. The capacity of a T30 Untilmate stand is already 90#. Not only would there be little gained, but at 100# your likley to over-load it thinking it is somehow better than a typical aluminum tripod when in fact it isn't.

Best bet is to go for at least 200# or better. These tend to be more compact and easily transported. Get steel rather than aluminum. Alumium in this class will wear out faster, and you'll be replacing them too often. Steel will also be safer if you are not entirely sure of your exact load weight.

200# stands typically top out at 11 or 12 feet in height. In all cases make sure the leg spread is sufficient for the distribution of the load you intend to apply, and the load should not be contingent upon a center leg spreader the way it is in typical tripods.

Excellent points, Proformance!

I have the K&Ms I got used with a bunch of other gear. I like them when I use my full light show, however the 3 ft extension is too much for me. I'd like a short extension when i use them cause other wise, the stands them selves don't go that high with a ladder truss.

B-Sharp,

If you were closer to Iowa, I just might take those K&Ms off your hands. But with their weight I'm guessing the shipping would be a beast!
