Weird one. I got a text this morning, asking if we were available 7-25-15. They gave me times, 4p-10p and an address. I sent back a price and got another text that said the price was good and asked if we did video. I said "no" and asked for an email of where to send the invoice. On the initial text, they said they were in the hospital for "hearing surgery" and thanked me for doing text. I just now got response back to my email request and received this:

Sound great and here is my email [email protected] I will be needing you to do me a favor regarding my planner funds to them please! I need you to know that you will be playing top 40 for me on that day

Now the english has been pretty believable, up to that last message. They did provide me what appears to be a valid email address and I can use SquareUp.com to send an invoice. This does (obviously) sound like a scam but for the life of me, what's the scam? What's it going to benefit them if they get a payment request from Square?

some email @ live . com is valid?

Sorry, I ain't posting what they sent, just in the off-chance this is a valid request for service.
OK .. thought that was what they sent. I would be leery though on "favor" and "funds".

I will be needing you to do me a favor regarding my planner funds to them please!

Scam Next they'll send you a check and ask you to pay the other vendors. The check will bounce & your out the money.
Usually they are deaf. Hearing surgery? New one!

I was almost tempted to call the text number. I'm wondering if there's any chance that actually could be the scammer's cell number. If I could verify that it'd be drop-dead simple to flood them with texts. Wish I hadn't told them to get bent.

Anytime I get a hint of a request being a scam, I delete it. I figure the off chance that a bogus request may be legitimate is so rare, that looking into them doesn't make financial sense.

Yes I may possibly lose an actual person that happens to be overseas or in the hospital and wants my highest package without finding out what that entails. But that's ok. I'll take my chances and save the time.

Cause it's FUN!!!
I get emails that are supposedly from my Internet Provider, saying my mailbox is full and I need to do something to fix it.
I often send them 100 or so replies, just to annoy them.

In all serious-ness, I agree with Mike here. Being an IT guy, when I get crap from someone I sometimes enjoy using my little IT skills to put some serious punishment on jerks who have caused me grief. I once had a creep from Australia, whom I got into an online squabble. He actually contacted my place of employment and tried to get me fired. I waited about 6 months, then setup a program to mass-post from anonymous servers. Ran that for about 2-3 years. It was great fun to watch him squirm about, crying about it all in the newsgroup, and he finally just disappeared from the web.

The instant that anyone doesn't want to speak with you in person . . . on the phone . . . should be the instant you turn them down.

It is as simple as that.
