I own the Behringer UCA 202 as I said above and it works just fine. The computer recognizes it every time without doing anything except plugging it in to the USB port. I don't own the Turtle Beach, just going based on what I've read that they seem to work just fine. I saw one on ebay, brand new for $19.95 and I was thinking of getting it just to have a backup.

They have generic, Chinese made USB sound "cards" that look like a dongle for next to nothing on ebay, they're like $5 to $10 including shipping. I imagine they work fine, but I haven't tried one.

I have one of the cheapy dongle cards -- sounds about the same as the rest...


You can't go wrong with the Berry UCA-202 -- that is my goto for testing purposes (and is the device of choice on my development systems). They're big enough that you can't lose them, won't break off like the Turtle Beach/Cheap dongle type, have RCA ins and outs, and are basically indestructible :)

Their sound is flat -- no preamp like the Giga and others, which enhance the mids and highs with a preamp circuit. That also means they have a lower output, since they are not amplified in any way. Just a basic DAC that works, for the right price. You can buy 4 of them for the price of a Gigaport, and not have to worry about any driver issues, et. al.


Word of advice on USB devices -- always, and I mean always -- plug them into the same port you used when you first plugged them in. Windows assigns the default drivers to that port. If you plug it into a different port, Windows will again load the drivers for that port. If you keep bouncing devices around, you will have drivers loaded for all sorts of different things on your USB ports. This will only lead to problems down the road. Do the same with your hubs, and you will not have to thank me one day, because your system won't start acting up... ;) :)

I learned that the hard way (well, hard enough). Fortunately I was able to use Computer Admin to free up the assignments for the drives. I was running out of drive letters.

I've used all three plus a SB external and I am hard pressed to find any difference between any of them and the headphone output on the Inspirons.....

Mabye if I was using .WAV it might be different
 
Thank you for all your help, input, and great welcome. Our system is pretty basic. We use my daughters old laptop with vista that she used for college. We wiped it back to factory, got rid of all the junk we wouldn't use and upgraded the chips. So now it has the Groove program and our music. We don't use it for anything else. Also have a couple external hard drives for backup.We run that into a Behringer 1204 Xenyx usb mixer.

I am ordering the Turtle Beach Micro2 external usb sound card. After I get it, I'll post back how it works out.

I use the ESI Gigaport like Tom does. It is a nice clean signal and utilizes ONE USB port while giving EIGHT outputs plus an optical. That is hard to beat for versatility. It has not failed me yet, over 4 years usage so far. Besides which, Traktor, my DJ software has four Decks and the Gigaport is an ideal match.

How do you preview another song from your library while one is playing?
I take it that you let the DJ software do your mixing/work for you, right?
 
My mixer is also my sound card. a usb cable connects my mixer to my computer. One other cable goes from the mixer to the amp, which also provides power to the mixer.

Would you believe that my Gigaport has a better sound output than my New Pioneer's MEP 7000 onboard soundcard. I can tell the difference. You would think that the new technology in the Pioneer should be better. Not really.

That's because you are listening to a gained (processed) output on the Giga -- the MEP is probably closer to a flat response... ;)

I affectionately refer to my Gigaports (I have both the AG & HD) as tone controls :sqerr:

So let me get this right.I can go out of the usb on the computer and run rca's to the mixer chanel and the sound card will work.Right? Can I run 2 outs to 2 differnt channels so I can mix like normal? Help!

I use it for just that purpose, but I also put a little pre-amp inline- in this case the Behringer PP400

2 Cards = 2 Ports used. Get a Multiple External Sound Card, use one port, there are several available including the Gigaport. Outputs = One pair for the Left Deck, One pair for your Right Deck and another pair for your headphones.
 
I received the Turtle Beach Micro2 external usb sound card. All I can say is WOW! I have way more volume now, and much clearer sound. What a difference from a part that was less then $20. Running out of the headphones jack on the computer is not the way to go.
