School & Teen Events Complaint letter to School

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
I did a couple of school dances and after i was done the adviser came up to me and said what a great job i did and i said to her why, i didn't do anything different than i normally do, she told me they have school kids every now and then do dances and they play crap, you get what you pay for
 
Griff if you let people control you by comments you will not have the pleasure of being labeled the Old DJ who looks like Grandpa who rocked the house at the same school dances. Farley Flex a Canadian Record Producer and judge of Canadian Idol came up to me four weeks ago and asked me, "What do you Young (white) Guys know about classic Soca Music"? I took it as a compliment. Not only him considering me young but also glad he was surprised a white guy knew the right stuff. By the way he didnt say white but the party had 360 West Indian people in attendance. Im also pretty sure Im older than Mr Flex. I took it with optimistic pride.
 
With today's technology (music & gear) the glory days for school dance DJs are coming to an end. (unless you are looking to DJ for less)

Schools are broke & looking for the cheapest form of entertainment.
Most of these kids have all the new music on their MP3 players, all they need is some way to amplify it (most schools have some sort of audio gear mixer/mics, etc.)

When my son was in school, the janitor used to be the DJ at their dances (...and cleanup when it was over!)

I think the letter would have more credibility coming from another parent, because most will say "Oh, he's just a disgruntled DJ" (sour grapes)
 
Bill Im amazed the ADJA hasnt had Arnoldo come give you a school gig pep talk hes the latest craze in his area doing schools with fresh ideas that many havent use ever or forgotten about using from many yrs gone by. Schools dont need money to provide a dance and good times for the kids. I have used many methods to help kids do the leg work to allow funds etc to be available to cover off my DJ packages along with making a profit for clubs etc.

I have no idea who arnoldo is & could care less. If he did, I intentionally skipped it.
I stopped doing school dances years ago.
 
so Bill your comments in this thread are trivial and not really valid since you havent a clue about the current market.
 
I have only clean songs and I play clean songs whether they want them clean or not. I did an "adult only" party once, and the songs I have are edited clean. Someone told me to play the originals that had really bad language. I was honest and told him that I have the clean songs only.

Well, I talked to my son Saturday morning and he said that some High School students did the music from their Ipods. He said that they had way cooler lights that I do (lights are not my thing) but my music is better and I do a better job. I asked him what he meant. I asked him about the music and he said they didn't have any radio edits or censored music. This kind of got to me. I am not a prude but they should not be playing the unedited versions of songs for Middle school dances.

I sent an email to the Principal and tried to sound more like a concerned parent (which I was in this case) than a DJ who was trying to get the next dance. It could have been taken either way but I felt I needed to say something. I will post my letter and the reply from the Principal.

Not really looking for any "should have done this" kind of thing, just wanted to put this out there.

Now it could go either way. They could just think I was PO'd at not getting the job or that I am a concerned parent. Which I am more of a concerned parent than the other. They do not like to pay much and I really am not big on these dances.

Anyway, I am hoping they at least try to do things a bit differently.

As the Devil's advocate today:

I think it sounds like a rather desperate and transparent pitch. You seem more annoyed at not getting the job.

You didn't share even one example of an inappropriate song that was played. If you were really bothered by unedited versions (unlikely since you were not even there to experience them) then why even highlight (6 times no less) that you are a DJ? What do contracts, liability insurance, how to hire a professional, and (mysterious) unforeseen circumstances, have to do with you as a parent being offended by lyrics you haven't cited?
