While I am in league with your disdain for the subject foolishness, I would have responded with a different tone, spirit, but the same intent and one that delivered the reader to the same realization and satisfied my desire to shine the light of day on these rank amateurs .

From my experience, any behavior contrary to that would be a serious red flag that I was involved with a very inexperienced, unprofessional service and I may be putting the success of my celebration or, at very least, those special moments you deserve at serious risk.
If there are some specific and special requests that are not currently in my professional and legitimate library, it would be my pleasure to obtain those few songs, if they are legally available for purchase, and at no additional cost to you.

Very well said.... I wish I had waited until I was in front of a computer and took more time to think out my response.... you just posted what I was trying inadaquately to say.
I also have had to purchase many songs for some events that the client wanted. With the songs being so cheap now, I never had a problem with it. Unless of course you are talking about if they are more than the usual .99 cents a song. If they want many songs that I don't have I just usually tell them to bring the songs to the event especially if they are songs that I will only use that one time.
But charging a fee to my client for each song I need is ridiculous, I just make sure that any song I need to purchase will be included in my rates, if not, it is time to charge more just in case you do need to make further downloads. Just my opinion.......

I finally got to ask her directly.... no, some other DJ didn't say he'd be charging for songs he'd have to hunt down and purchase.... it was just a question that was nagging at her to ask.

if your smart in how you break down cost analysis, music misc. ought to be part of your business expense.
the bride for one of my gigs in May requested microphones so two friends could each sing a song at her ceremony.
she asked if I had the instrumental/kareoke versions
Since I do NOT, I told her how to get them off of Amazon.
Yes! I could have done it myself, but she was more than willing to get them....
and in the end
1- I will not have a use for them in the future
2- I didn't want a situation where I did not download the correct version for them to sing along to...
(wrong tempo, not same version, different key, etc)
It was NOT a matter of cost....I could have easily horked up the 2-bucks!
