Carpeted Racks Vs Flight Cases/Racks

Is that Duraflex material pretty durable? I was thinking of repainting some old Vintage JBL subs. Does it have a glossy, satin or flat finish?

Duratex is slightly less durable than bedliner or X-line...but much easier to apply and touch up. I roll on a textured finish and after about 20 load in/out there are some minor dings. 5 minutes per cabinet with a foam brush and it was like new. The finish is satin.

How many coats do you have to apply the first time? My cabinets are already painted black.

I put on two coats - a base coat, and a texture coat. I could just do a texture coat...but I prefer two thin(ner) coats to one heavier coat.

Duratex is self priming on bare wood. They recommend sanding to rough up the surface if there is paint on the wood already.

Space for space, true flight cases are not much lighter in weight than plywood, carpeted cases due to construction material. They are however much more durable and easier to keep clean.

I prefer SKB's molded rack cases myself. These things are much lighter in weight than plywood, carpeted cases. Plus, they're a lot harder to break. Wolfie's been known to break things while loading 'em from time to time. I haven't been able to break these SKBs. We've been loading 'em since 2000. :)

Some years ago, a DJ buddy got one of those big, honkin' all-in-one carpeted cases to rack his system. We were laughing about it... he said he did one show with it and sold the thing. Once loaded with gear it was so heavy he could barely move it. The darn thing weighed in at 70# empty. :D

theres that and the white hair issue with the carpeted cases..

I have a pair of JBL TR-125's that are quite old, but still sound great.
the JBL's have the plastic-like covering which tends to crack and the cracks grow wider with age.
I was thinking of something to "paint" them with
and this is the first I heard of DURATEX.
I assume it's an automobile/truck product?
is it sold in regular stores?

Yup, I sure remember that. If that don't wreck an SKB case, nothing will. :)
