Lets suppose you have a Wedding Gig to do on a Saturday and the day before, the Friday, you come down with the Flu. Would you cancel if you have nobody to fill in for you?

Well, since both Ducky and I go to every event we do together, one of us will be in good enough shape to run the show.

Nah, I take more care of my patients. But there are times when the stuff is needed a lot faster so some times you have to do it fast.

The Flu!! is that all you got? I had a stomach virus once that lasted over 3 weeks. Still went to work and played weddings. Just get out of my way when I headed for the bathroom!!
I do not have the flu, I don't get the Flu. It was just a question.

Nope - the show must go on. Been there...done that.
So you see no problem in infecting others with whom you will come in contact?

I don't leave the house if I have the flu -- wouldn't want to spread the good cheer

Last time I had it was 2004, when my whacky ex brought her kid over, when she knew he had it. I spent the next two weeks in bed in agony. I'd have to really dislike someone to pass that on, so yes, I would cancel if I couldn't find somebody to cover it.

Personally for me, I would find someone else to do the Gig for me either 100% or take a referral fee out of it. Under the circumstances, I am sure the Client won't have a problem with a replacement, because they surely won't want their Honeymoon spoiled by a bout of Influenza thanks to the DJ. There may be children attending the Wedding and I don't think it will be fair to expose them to my ailment. However, (as Randy would be the first to tell me), that is my opinion and what I would do if it was up to me.

But your questions was....

I have 4 fill-ins at my disposal if I were too become to ill to play. If they were not avaliable I also know thee other single ops in my area.

Yes I would cancel, however as a DJ, I know lots of other DJs. If I have someone like an associate DJ/friend to fill in, it would be a substitute. If I have to pass the Gig on to another DJ Company, that would be considered as a cancellation on my part.

Because it is now apparent that liberties have been taken and exceptions presented from the original questions, here's a clarification before my answer.

Cancel means to me, calling the customer directly, telling them I'm sick, that I will not be there, and good luck with whatever they decide to do on their own. No safety net or alternative suggestions offered. Just a plain old, everyday, garden variety, blow off, potential breach of contract.

Never! I have nightmares about not making it wedding even though healthy and with medical and vehicular back-up planning (and both plans have been successfully implemented one time each).

Would I cancel even if there were options (multi-op send the other guy or network contact list) just for the flu? Never.

Lose my voice? My wife becomes my vocal interpreter immediately. I'm still there. Gotta work to be paid. I don't get sick time as a self-employed businessman.

Haven't cancelled a gig yet!
Only had to miss ONE....when my wife was pregnant and she needed a last minute C-section.
I found out the Thursday before.
But didn't really "cancel" the gig...I was working for the multi-op, and we had someone else fill in.

Like others, I have many friends in the biz who could cover...and I have filled in for many of them in the past.

The flu can be extremely deadly to many people -- thousands die from it every year. Anyone who goes out in public with it, is being selfish, and not owning up to their responsibility.

You may have not gotten the flu yet .. but I don't know of anyone who can't. It's not so much an issue of how you take care of yourself, but of what you come in contact with.

I never said I can't, I said I don't! I can kiss a woman who has strep throat and not catch it. Trust me, my ailments are usually physical.
