Brownout KILLED my projector

I assume you went through the manual. They list a couple of steps to check at first (most are silly and I assume you checked them):

Power does not come on.

The electrical power cord is not plugged in. (A) Correctly connect the power cord.

The main power source has been interrupted during operation such as by a power outage (blackout), etc. (A) Please disconnect the power plug from the power outlet, and allow the projector to cool down at least 10 minutes, then turn the power on again.

Either there is no lamp and/or lamp cover, or either of these has not been properly fixed. (A) Please turn the power off and disconnect the power plug from the power outlet, and allow the projector to cool down at least 45 minutes. After the projector has sufficiently cooled down, please make confirmation of the attachment state of the lamp and lamp cover, and then turn the power on again.

If you are getting nothing (no LEDs, no fan), then I assume it is a power supply or control board that may have either been hit with a voltage spike during the brownout or the varying voltage was too much for the rectifiers to handle.

Owners manual doesn't show any internal workings .. there could be a fuse soldered on one of the boards (I have an old A&H mixer that had that). I've lost several PC power supplies during brown outs .. most likely during the power back on phase.

Yup did everything listed. I'm letting sit unplugged overnight and will try again tomorrow. This was my personal projector I've used in my classroom for 4 years. I'm told by my Tech guy tonight "no worries" I have a budget and your due for some kind of replacement.

Good. I'll take an 80" flat panel on the wall lol...!

No power light. Nothing.

Cable is fine.

Hitachi CP-X301. Before I dive into this thing does anyone know if they have an internal fuse or have seen this happen?

thanks,
Try unseating and then reseating the Lamp. Look at the filament to see if it is burnt out.

If there's no 'power' light, I'm fairly certain that the lamp won't have anything to do with it. I agree that it most likely is a power supply, PCB or fuse.

Canute is giving proper information here. In the manual it says that if the lamp is no good /unseated/power outage ----- then the power light will not go on...

David, it doesn't say that anywhere. Page 60-61 cover the indicator lamps. Page 62-64 covers 'Phenomena that may be easy to be mistaken for machine defects'. Nowhere on page 62 (which is what you posted) do they mention anything like the indicator lamps being off.

The only information about all indicator lamps being off is on page 61:

Note: When the interior portion has become overheated, for safety purposes, the projector is automatically shut down, and the indicator lamps may also be turned off. In such a case, disconnect the power cord, and wait at least 45 minutes. After the projector has sufficiently cooled down, please make confirmation of the attachment state of the lamp and lamp cover, and then turn the power on again.

If the light is blown the machine may take this as the light not being there....

Correct, but that may or may not stop the indicator lights from coming on.

According to the manual, the only condition that would turn all the indicator lights off - would be overheating. Obvious possibilities outside of that, power not reaching the components.

You can't just use the fact that the power isn't coming on - a very important detail was given - there are no indicator lights.

Tigger our projector at church went out last Sunday do to the end of life of the bulb. The machine would not turn back on until the light was changed. It is an ACER machine I bet the Hitachi has the same behavior.

Dave, I'm not debating turning it on or turning it off. I'm specifically talking about the indicator lamps, which most are LED. When you plug it in, these indicator lights should come on (even with a bad bulb). Kinda hard to indicate what's wrong if they don't come on. Is it possible that it is the lamp, absolutely - but there is no info to say it is. I'm taking it a bit further and saying that because there's no power to even the indicator lights, there may be other issues.

Usually, with a blown bulb, at least one LED will come on (though the projector may not start) .. it seemed in JT's case, there just wasn't any power internally .. usually an indication of a power supply issue.

UPDATE:

Letting it sit overnight unplugged seemed to do the trick. I think there is a self protect cache onboard that prevents reboot after voltage drops or something. Leaving unplugged cleared that problem out of the system. Good to go.

THIS is why I LOVE Hitachi Projectors.

2600 Lumen over 5 years old. 2nd lamp, no problems apparently
