Blogging....An observation

Ok, so "blogging" is the new 'must-do' to stay in business...

Or is it?

Looking at a couple of blog sites this afternoon -both DJ-related, I see something that I wonder is this a common thread?

One blog had an entry from a DJ who wants you to be a "Perfect HOST at Events" :sqwink: That person posted the jpg of a Prime Cuts weekly song list. He mentions that he'll post the list weekly. Ok, he posts it for 2 consecutive weeks in May '09 & then nothing since then.

Another blog from another DJ - saying I'll post a monthly trivia question & the winner will win a signed copy of my book. :sqwink: Only see one such thread.

Then Ron mentions the notable absence/irregularity of the "monthly" 1% news letter - Yes, I consider this an "early blog". Well, what would you call it?

SO - Recapping, here 3 (or so) blogs from DJs that promise one thing, but fall short in there delivery.

Is this is what should be expected from them in other aspects?

Am I reading too much into this / or not, as the case may be?

Cheers,

Joe

I posted several great blogs I read weekly... they don't promise free things... but i learn a little from each one.

Well, I would call the 1% newsletter PURE CRAP since I never get the issues I paid for. I guess it made Randy 1% richer, though.

I am making a non DJ blog now.... So far I have about 5 posts in about 10 days.

I know what opinion post are is a BLOG something like that?

I am still trying to figure out what the hell a twitter is, I know what a tweeter is!

A BLOG is a personal website where you basically can post about any and everything....

it is short for weblog.

take a look at www.blogger.com from google. It is free to use.

Joe,

You are not looking at the right blogs then :)

Jamie

Actually he's looking at the blogs of two of the biggest names in the industry.
Haha, you're right Joe, I had noticed the same thing about a month ago.

we have far too much to worry about blogging all day

if you spend your time online just to blog then you need another job

Blogging is effective if done on a consistent and regular basis. Andy Ebon just spoke about this at the past couple of conferences I went to.

Andy also states Joe that if you don't blog for at least 30 days that your blog is dead. :sqwink:

What's a BLOG? :sqconfused:
I left one on the bowl this morning. It was 1% bigger than yesterday. I was thinking about writting a book about it. I think I'll call it "The Best Blog in the Bowl Ever!" Want me to take a pic for ya?:sqerr:

I haven't used my blog in months...probably because I've been spending too much time on here! :sqwink: If figure that I'll get back into the routine after I get a new job and my life gets back into more of a routine.

Blogs are great if you can keep up on them. As DJs, I think that we have to be careful about what we write in our blogs...I don't recommend complaining much. At the same time, I think that blogging about every wedding and going on about how perfect it was and how happy you are for the couple, etc. can have the potential to come off as cheesy BS, if it is done incorrectly. I guess what I'm saying here is that if you use your real voice behind the blog, instead of that of a salesman, it shows you are honest.

I think that a blog could be useful for posting gig reports, as long as they're not over-the-top. I never really did much of this for my blog. I do find they are great for providing updates and other thoughts on topics that are not on the main website. I agree, that if they're not maintained, it doesn't look good...something I really need to improve upon.

Should you use your clients last names on your blog? Why or why not? Privacy issues? What say you?

I'd say no last names. If you want to share YOUR information, that's fine, but sharing client information? That's much more sensitive, IMO.

Hmmm, good question. Hadn't thought of that. I am putting together my blog, hopefully to launch by end of summer, still in learn and design faze right now. I will probably use first names only.

Basically Joe, Jim Cerone, Peter Merry, and Randy Bartlett as I am guessing these are the blogs in question, are just a lot of talk. They like to hype themselves up and try to dazzle the weak minded, the easily impressed. If they get nothing out of a venture like the blog, the 1% newsletter, the DJA radio shows, they move on to the next money making sceme. It's the "what's in it for me" syndrome. If they were good at what we think they do, DJing, they wouldn't be trying to impress so many easily impressed DJ's into giving up their hard earned money over junk they call educational material. Which is one of the reasons why you find them at the same old conferences and in the same old circle group. They all play off each other. Hey, everyone's out to make money, it's why we are in business. But there is a difference between good education and a dog and pony road show.

Of course this is just my observation and opinion. I could be wrong but I doubt it. And Joe, I still owe you for making me sit through an hour of excruciating pain. An hour of my life I will never get back. I'm still having nauseating night mares of that video of the Peter Merry roast of 2005. I thought I saw Peter and Dan McCay having man love in that video. They must be close friends having Dan roast him like that. And to believe they actually sold that video and made money on it? Good thing someone gave you a copy.:sqwink:

No last names.

Thinking about it, even for my 'Letters of Referral' page on my website - I will either do initials or first names, I believe.

Privacy is the main reason.

Cheers,

Joe
